East Park to be pickleball venue

Staff writer

A tennis court at seldom-used East Park will be converted to pickelball, joining planned indoor pickleball courts at a new multimillion-dollar concession stand and locker facility nearby.

Roger Hannaford asked city council members to put one or more pickleball courts where a tennis court now is in the park, recently returned to the city by the school district.

The East Park tennis court at East Park would need some work, mainly repainting the courts, but Hannaford suggested a fundraiser to support the work in answer to a question. Hannaford told council member Kevin Burkholder he had not measured the tennis courts to see if could hold two pickleball courts.

Burkholder said he would be in Wamego this week and would look at pickleball courts there.

Council members voted unanimously to approve converting the tennis courts at East Park into pickleball courts.

Engineer Darin Neufeld spoke to commissioners about grants that would pay 100% of water projects and technical assistance.

Council members voted to allow Neufeld to apply for the grants.
