Eatery getting major facelift

Staff writer

As is often the case when a historic building is remodeled, Jonathan and Leora Ramirez have uncovered more problems than they expected renovating the interior of Cazadore’s Mexican restaurant in Marion.

The couple have plunged in up to their elbows and are working to bring a fresh, new look to the building.

“We’re making it really beautiful upstairs,” Leora said.

They ran into an unexpected obstacle when they found out the next-door-building’s sewer line hooked to theirs in the basement. Once that problem was solved, now they are busily installing new floors — joists, underlayment, flooring and all.

At the pace they are working, Leora said she hopes to have the dining room completed in a couple of weeks.

The back room can be reserved for private groups, and also will be renovated after the dining room is finished.

The restaurant’s popular buffet will be permanently moved to the private dining room when work is complete. A taco bar will be added there as well.

Remodeling plans include new bathrooms, and pay and order screens on each table.

A children’s play area will be added, but the couple hasn’t made a final decision on which room will house it.

When work on the dining areas is finished, the couple will turn their attention to kitchen renovation.

When all is said and done, Cazadore’s will offer seven-days-a-week service, jobs for high school students, and more local dining options for a growing population.

Because of the scope of the work, Cazadore’s will be open as the Ramirezes can juggle it.

For now, service will be available curbside while work is done on the dining room. Meals will be served this Friday by advance order, and future dates will be announced. To order, phone (316) 734-1075.

Customers have expressed interest in helping the Ramirezes with expenses, which have run higher than expected.

Since all lumber is being bought at The Building Center in Marion, anyone who would like to help can contact The Building Center.
