Lost Springs native Edgar E. “Ed” Riffel, 90, of Herington, died May 2 at Herington Municipal Hospital.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Herington. Burial with military honors will follow at Lewis Cemetery, Ramona. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Zeiner Funeral Home — Herington Chapel.
Born July 16, 1926, to Otto and Ida (Strauss) Riffel at Lost Springs, he attended school in Ramona, and was drafted by the Navy during his senior year to serve in World War II.
Riffel worked as a press operator for the Salina Journal and Kansas City Star.
He married Elsie Brouhard on Sept. 26, 1948, in Hope. She survives.
Other survivors include sons Lance Riffel and Kevin Riffel, both of Wichita, and Rod Riffel of Rose Hill; daughter Valerie Smith of Overland Park; sister Pearl Ulrich of Pigeon, Michigan; stepbrothers Leonard Riffel of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Perry Riffel of Valparaiso, Indiana; stepsisters Connie Lueker of Hoisington and Maureen Peterson of Burdick; half-sister Madeleine Diekson of Allen, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 38 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Melba Stiebe, and half brother, Ivan Riffel.
