Elm St. loses out, but curb to be replaced regardless

Staff writer

After delaying for more than a year in hope of receiving a grant that ended up being denied last week, Marion City Council decided Monday to go ahead and repair damaged curbing along Elm St. that led to a riverbank collapse.

Projects on Coble, Roosevelt, and Freeborn Sts., which the city tried to roll into the grant, will be postponed until 2021.

Councilman Chris Costello supported delaying any new major construction until economic situations stabilize.

“I think it makes sense to see where we are financially,” he said. “We don’t know if things are going this way, that way, or flat. That could impact it.”

Even if large projects are suspended, some repairs need to be done sooner than later, mayor Dave Mayfield said.

“I agree we could probably put them off until next year but I’d certainly like to look at finishing repairs that need to be made during that time,” he said. “There are some chuck holes out there that do need to be filled. Just keep staying on top of that and I think we’d probably be fine.”
