DISPATCHES

These broadcasts regarding fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

NOV. 28

11:55 a.m. — Peabody ambulance took a patient from a location garbled in radio recordings to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. Although not dispatched, Marion ambulance also responded, but the Marion response was cancelled by Peabody EMTs.

12:40 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

12:54 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman who fell and hit her head at Hillsboro Senior Center was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance because Hillsboro ambulance was en route to Wichita.

1:23 p.m. — Peabody ambulance was ordered to silently arrive at a garbled location near Hillsboro and received additional instructions via a private text message from a sheriff’s deputy. A patient was taken to HCH, and the deputy involved met with a Hillsboro officer after the call.

2:24 p.m. — A 36-year-old diabetic suffering seizures in the 400 block of Floral Dr. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance. Dispatchers originally assigned the call to Hillsboro ambulance, but Marion EMTs informed them Hillsboro ambulance still had not returned from Wichita.

5:32 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

11:51 p.m. — A Tabor College student who reportedly had hit her head, was breathing erratically, and was unable to speak declined to be transported by Hillsboro ambulance.

NOV. 29

No fire or ambulance dispatches were recorded.

THURSDAY

8:40 a.m. — With only one EMT responding to a call in the 300 block of S. Locust St. in Peabody, Marion ambulance also responded and transported a patient to Newton Medical Center.

9:11 a.m. — With Marion ambulance still on the Peabody call, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient with congestive heart failure from Marion Assisted Living to St. Luke. The county emergency medical director also responded. After the patient was checked at St. Luke, the ambulance continued on to Wesley.

5:39 p.m. — Without explanation, Marion ambulance was dispatched to the sheriff’s office in Marion. An EMT asked the reason for the call and was told that an explanation would be provided upon the ambulance’s arrival. The county EMS director also responded. Thirty minutes later, the ambulance reported it was available. Sheriff Robert Craft later said a jail inmate engaged in self-harm and was taken to St. Luke. The inmate was transferred to a Wichita hospital and later returned.

9:00 p.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched on a call, the location of which was not recorded by newspaper monitoring equipment. Marion ambulance informed dispatchers it also would respond “in case they need our help.” The call apparently involved something being stuck in a patient’s hand. At 9:22 p.m., Peabody EMTs informed dispatchers than they had been unable to remove the item and that the patient would go by private vehicle to St. Luke for treatment.

9:06 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still headed to Peabody, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to St. Luke to transfer a patient to St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance waited at St. Luke until at 9:50 p.m., when it instead transported a different patient to St. Francis.

9:09 p.m. — Marion ambulance informed dispatchers that it was cancelling its backup run to Peabody and was heading instead to St. Luke to transfer the original patient to St. Joseph.

9:32 p.m. — Before the transfer began, first Peabody ambulance, which now reported that had only one EMT available, and then Marion ambulance were sent to the 700 block of Prairie Lawn Rd. in Peabody for an elderly man who had fallen, hit his head, and possibly dislocated his shoulder. Marion ambulance ended up taking the patient to Newton Medical Center.

9:51 p.m. — With Hillsboro, Marion, and Peabody ambulances tied up, Florence ambulance was dispatched to St. Luke to make the delayed transfer to St. Joseph. However, only one EMT responded. Dispatchers said they would page Tampa ambulance instead, but before the call could be made a second Florence EMT said he was available, and Florence ambulance handled the call.

10:51 p.m. — Ramona firefighters were called to an unreported controlled burn in a backyard in the 300 block of N. B St. Residents extinguished the fire then called dispatchers to report, as they initially should have, that there would be a controlled burn at the location.

FRIDAY

5:49 a.m. — Marion ambulance transferred a patient from St. Luke to St. Francis.

10:44 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was called to US-56 and Goldenrod Rd. after a low-speed chase involving a diabetic driver who recently had a heart attack. The patient, who had refused to stop while driving very slowly and erratically, finally was pulled over and taken to HCH.

3:09 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman with low blood sugar in the 200 block of E. 5th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence ambulance also responded with a single EMT.

3:12 p.m. — With Marion ambulance handling the Florence call, Hillsboro ambulance was sent Hilltop Manor in Marion for a woman having trouble breathing. Reporting a potentially life-threatening situation, the ambulance remained on the scene for more than half an hour before taking the patient to St. Luke.

3:58 p.m. — Marion firefighters extinguished remnants of a controlled burn that Union Pacific Railroad said had threatened railroad traffic near 210th and Sunrise Rds.

SATURDAY

10:52 a.m. — Peabody ambulance assisted but did not transport a man who had fallen out of his wheelchair. Location of the call was garbled.

SUNDAY

10:11 a.m. — Florence ambulance treated but did not transport a railroad employee who reportedly suffered a seizure aboard at train near US-50 and Wagon Wheel Rd.

3:41 p.m. — A utility vehicle fire that threatened to spread to grass at 290th Rd. and the Marion / McPherson County line was extinguished by Durham and Canton firefighters.

6:52 p.m. — Three people were initially reported as being injured in a head-on collision at 120th and Indigo Rds. However, when rescuers arrived at 7:04 p.m., they discovered there were only two victims, and both of them declined to be transported by ambulance.

Hillsboro and Peabody ambulances, Goessel firefighters, and Peabody rescue squad were initially dispatched. Marion ambulance and Hillsboro rescue squad opted to respond as well, a helicopter ambulance also was summoned, and a paramedic who was in the area volunteered to help.

All medical units were told to return to base after the first unit, Hillsboro ambulance, arrived at the scene. The ambulance remained there for several minutes until a ride for one of the victims arrived.

MONDAY

6:38 a.m. — Marion firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in a truck west of the US-56/77 and K-150 roundabout.

11:42 a.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched on a call, the location of which was not recorded. Marion ambulance reported it was en route to assist but was dismissed by Peabody ambulance, which transported a patient to Newton Medical Center.

3:37 p.m. — Two people were reported injured in a two-vehicle accident at US-50 and Nighthawk Rd. Peabody ambulance took one victim to Newton Medical. A helicopter ambulance and Marion ambulance, which also were called, were canceled after the second victim declined to be transported. Peabody firefighters and rescue squad also were dispatched, and the county EMS director also responded
