Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JULY 1

7:48 p.m. — A 55-year-old Country Inn motel guest on blood thinners who fell while drinking, hit his head, and was bleeding was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:15 p.m. — Half a gallon of gasoline that a motorist spilled while filling her vehicle at an unattended Ampride station in Hillsboro was rendered safe by Hillsboro’s fire chief.

JULY 2

1:20 a.m. — A man having chest pains in the 200 block of E. Division St. in Peabody was evaluated by Peabody ambulance attendants as having a possibly life-threatening condition but declined to be taken to a hospital.

6:07 a.m. — A Salem Home patient was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Additional information was not recorded.

6:28 a.m. — A woman who began feeling dizzy, weak, and nauseated in the 700 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was taken to Newton Medical Center by Peabody ambulance.

2:44 p.m. — An 89-year-old woman who began feeling weak at a residence in the 200 block of E. Commercial St. in Goessel was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. First responders from Goessel did not answer a page.

3:22 p.m. — Marion ambulance was en route to HCH to transfer a patient back to Salem Home when it put that call on hold and responded to the next call instead.

3:45 p.m. — A man with blood coming out of his mouth after passing out at a farmhouse on Xavier Rd. between 290th and 300th Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance, which arrived at 4:04 p.m., 10 minutes after first responders from Lincolnville and a single EMT from Tampa ambulance. The ambulance arrived at St. Luke 1 hour 10 minutes after the initial call.

5:04 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, which returned from Newton at 4:46 p.m., completed the interrupted call to transfer a patient from HCH to Salem Home.

5:58 p.m. — A woman found unconscious and unresponsive but breathing in a camper in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was loaded into Peabody ambulance, which met Marion ambulance at 6:11 p.m. and, 16 minutes later, with a Marion paramedic on board, took the woman to Newton Med, arriving at 6:46 p.m.

8:21 p.m. — Still en route back from Peabody, Marion ambulance was called to St. Luke to transfer a patient to Newton Med. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:53 p.m.

10:12 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was called to stand by during a domestic dispute at a mobile home in the 300 block of W. 3rd St. in Hillsboro. A woman who described herself as seven weeks’ pregnant reported being struck by a man but declined to be taken to a hospital.

JULY 3

12:43 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

4:47 p.m. — A fire in a hayfield at 50th and Wagonwheel Rds. was extinguished within 45 minutes by Burns and Florence firefighters.

5:44 p.m. — A septic patient was transferred from St. Luke to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

9:59 p.m. — A woman with rib pain who refused to leave Casey’s General Store in Hillsboro was, at the request of a police officer, checked by Hillsboro ambulance but declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:01 p.m. — A burning cardboard box, presumably related to a fireworks display at Marion Assisted Living, was quickly extinguished by a single Marion fire truck.

JULY 4

9:19 a.m. — A woman who fell at the Bethesda Homes duplexes in Goessel and needed help up declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, which arrived 21 minutes after the initial dispatch. Goessel first responders did not answer although a Goessel firefighter did report hearing the page’s alerting tone.

3:04 p.m. — A grassfire in a ditch on US-50 west of Limestone Rd. was out before Peabody firefighters arrived six minutes after the initial call.

3:16 p.m. — Three people were reported injured in a one-car accident, originally portrayed as a rollover, on Upland Rd. just north of Marion County Lake.

Marion firefighters and Marion ambulance, which earlier had repositioned itself to the Fourth of July celebration in Peabody, were dispatched. Hillsboro ambulance also responded as did a solitary Marion EMT.

Hillsboro ambulance arrived at 3:32 p.m., and Marion ambulance arrived at 3:34 p.m., but none of victims wished to be taken to a hospital

At 3:47 p.m., Marion ambulance returned to Peabody. At 4:03 p.m., Hillsboro ambulance left for St. Luke to complete paperwork. It returned to its station in Hillsboro at 4:41 p.m.

3:32 p.m. — A possibly septic 55-year-old woman at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.

8:17 p.m. — A dog that became stuck in quicksand-like mud in the middle of a dried-up pond near K-150 and Wagonwheel Rd., was rescued by Marion firefighters.

9:53 p.m. — A fireworks-related fire in a bush in the 300 block of N. Madison St. in Hillsboro was out before most Hillsboro firefighters could respond.

THURSDAY

12:01 a.m. — What appeared to be the same woman as was involved in a July 2 call, again describing herself as seven weeks’ pregnant, reported being attacked and bit by two dogs at a mobile home in the 300 block of W. 3rd St. in Hillsboro.

Police and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched, but the bite victim’s parent declined to allow victim to be taken to a hospital.

7:17 a.m. — A mentally disturbed man who had been reported to be walking around Florence and crying was examined by a single EMT from Florence ambulance, who walked with the patient and a sheriff’s deputy to the 100 block of E. 5th St. Marion ambulance and the undersheriff also were called, but the man was neither taken to a hospital nor arrested.

1:16 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman who was not feeling well at Peabody Health and Rehab at taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.

3:39 p.m. — A medical alert service’s report that a woman had fallen sent Hillsboro ambulance to an apartment in the 500 block of W. Grand St., but the woman did not want to be taken to a hospital.

4:26 p.m. — A 63-year-old man whose wife found him on the floor at a home in the 200 block of S. Church St. in Burns was taken to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado, by Peabody ambulance. First responders from Burns assisted.

7:19 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:11 p.m. — A young man with a cut on his leg was checked at the Hillsboro fire station by the county emergency medical service director. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which also was summoned to complete paperwork.

FRIDAY

11:29 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance started toward Bethesda Home in Goessel after receiving a report of a resident who fell there, but the call was canceled three minutes later.

2:29 p.m. — A power failure was reported in Goessel.

9:15 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

SATURDAY

2:44 a.m. — A 15-year-old driver who rolled his car west of Lincolnville on 290th Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance from a home in the 400 block on N. Topeka St. in Lincolnville, where he apparently had gone after the crash and was threatening to harm himself.

Authorities were alerted by a parent at work who was concerned about his wife being alone with their son, whom the father said needed to be taken to a mental health center for evaluation.

First responders from Lincolnville answered the call without being paged. A Lincolnville firefighter also located the car.

A sheriff’s deputy, dispatched from Goessel, and a Marion police officer arrived later. Tampa ambulance arrived 32 minutes after the initial call and left for St. Luke almost exactly an hour after the initial call, arriving at 4:05 a.m.

7:16 a.m. — Both Hillsboro ambulance and Tampa ambulance, serving as a first-response unit with just one EMT, were dispatched to a farmhouse on Limestone Rd., just south of the Dickinson County line, after an alarm company reported that a woman had fallen and needed help getting up.

The Tampa EMT canceled the call to Hillsboro ambulance 22 minutes later and left the scene to return to Tampa 48 minutes after that, arriving back at the ambulance station at 8:35 a.m.

9:42 a.m. — An 81-year-old man with gastrointestinal bleeding at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to Newton Med by Marion ambulance, which responded along with a single EMT acting as a first responder in Peabody ambulance. The ambulance did not leave for Newton until 10:27 a.m.

9:50 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman in the 300 block of E. Main St. in Goessel picked a scab and couldn’t stop the bleeding. A Goessel first responder, already on the scene, requested an ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance evaluated the patient as being in a life-threatening situation, but she declined to be transported to a hospital.

10:26 a.m. — Still not clear of their previous calls, Hillsboro ambulance and Peabody ambulance, again with one EMT acting as a first responder, were sent to the 500 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody for woman who could not get up off the floor. At 10:47 a.m., a second EMT for Peabody ambulance became available, so Hillsboro ambulance was told to disregard the call. At 11:01 a.m., Peabody ambulance took the woman to Newton Med.

12:17 p.m. — A 71-year-old man who sat on the floor but could not get back up at a residence in the 200 block of Walnut St. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

2:36 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

3:39 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:33 p.m. — A dizzy 93-year-old woman with high blood pressure in the 700 block of Plum St. in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Peabody ambulance. Marion ambulance was briefly sent on the same call until a second EMT responded and completed the Peabody ambulance crew.

8:14 p.m. — A woman who fell and needed assistance getting back up was helped by Marion ambulance and was not taken to a hospital.

11:06 p.m. — Five to 10 gallons of fuel that leaked from a Lincoln Town Car during a traffic stop at US-50 and Nighthawk Rd. was washed down by Peabody firefighters.

SUNDAY

12:42 a.m. — Tampa ambulance was told to stage outside Ramona after a neighbor reported being threatened by a gun in the 300 block of N. D St. in Ramona. With both on-duty sheriff’s deputies tied up booking prisoners at the jail, officers from Marion, Hillsboro, and the sheriff’s reservoir patrol responded, eventually being joined by one of the on-duty deputies. After evaluating the situation, deputies told the ambulance to stand down at 1:07 a.m.

6:39 a.m. — A kidney stone patient was transferred from HCH to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance, using the spare ambulance normally kept in Marion.

8:54 p.m. — A cardiac patient was transferred from St. Luke to St. Francis by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

1:06 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman unable to life herself up in a bathroom at a residence on K-15 between 150th and 160th Rds. was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. First responders from Goessel assisted.

1:45 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman with a rapid pulse having trouble walking in the 200 block of S. Buller St. in Goessel was evaluated by Goessel first responders but transported by an out-of-county Hesston ambulance, which dispatchers said was the nearest available.

2:47 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:20 p.m. — A lethargic 65-year-old woman with low blood-oxygen levels at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to St. Francis by Peabody ambulance.
