DISPATCHES

Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JULY 20

11:13 a.m. — At the request of the county emergency medical director, Burns first responders and the county’s ambulance shift supervisor from Marion helped a person use a chair lift to get into a car in the 200 block of N. Ohio St. in Burns. Marion and Peabody ambulances briefly dispatched as well, but those calls were canceled. The call technically was classified as a patient declining to be taken to a hospital.

JULY 21

5:14 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman with back and arm pain was taken by Marion ambulance from the 100 block of Ashley Dr., Marion, to St. Luke Hospital.

4:28 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman who was short of breath despite being on oxygen was taken by Hillsboro ambulance from the 300 block of S. Adams St., Hillsboro, to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

6:04 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Rock Regional Hospital, Derby, by Marion ambulance.

THURSDAY

10:41 a.m. — A 24-year-old woman involved in a disturbance near 310th and Nighthawk Rds. and concerned that this might result in a seizure was checked by Tampa ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

12:41 p.m. — A pregnant woman whose water broke was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to McPherson Hospital.

3:25 p.m. — A person injured in a one-vehicle accident near 120th and Diamond Rds. was taken to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel firefighters and first responders also were dispatched.

4:18 p.m. — A call relayed through relatives alerted Marion ambulance and police to the death of a resident who had been in ill health in the 300 block of S. Coble St., Marion.

5:03 p.m. — A 29-year-old obstetrics patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

6:58 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman who fell out of a wheelchair and hit her head at Salem Home, Hillsboro, was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

FRIDAY

12:30 p.m. — An 86-year-old man with gastrointestinal issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Rock Regional.

1:29 p.m. — Florence, Marion, and Cedar Point firefighters worked for seven hours to extinguish a fire that started in a trailer loaded with 34 round hay bales two miles east of Florence on US-50. Traffic on US-50 was restricted for much of the time.

8:29 p.m. — After no Peabody firefighters responded to a page, Burns firefighters were dispatched to a report of a gas line broken during excavation in an alley behind 2nd St. between Maple and Elm Sts. in Peabody.

When Burns firefighters also failed to respond, Florence firefighters, who had just completed work on the hay bale fire, offered to respond instead.

A Peabody fire truck eventually did respond, but dispatchers did not hear the response and asked Florence firefighters to continue. The transmission was not heard because dispatchers apparently do not monitor a special Peabody fire talk group that both the newspaper and Florence firefighters monitor.

Eventually, Florence firefighters were told they weren’t needed and notified Peabody firefighters that they were broadcasting to a talk group not monitored by dispatchers.

Peabody firefighters shut off the gas and turned the matter over to an Atmos Energy crew.

10:34 p.m. — Florence firefighters were called back to the site of the hay bale fire for a report of a rekindled grass fire. They remained there for another two hours.

SATURDAY

8:07 a.m. — A 79-year-old woman in pain and not alert at a farmhouse on Remington Rd. near 90th Rd. was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.

Dispatchers did not provide any element of the address for the call until asked by Peabody ambulance attendants nearly six minutes after the initial page.

3:12 p.m. — Without issuing a standard page, dispatchers activated a telephone alert to Florence firefighters about yet another rekindling of the hay bale fire. Firefighters checked the scene and informed dispatchers remnants of the blaze were likely to continue smoldering for some time.

5:06 p.m. — A Goessel firefighter who cut his lower leg with a chain saw at a farm near 100th and Alamo Rds. radioed to ask dispatchers to send Goessel first responders, who applied a tourniquet. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched and transported him to Newton Med.

SUNDAY

8:43 a.m. — A 76-year-old woman asked for Hillsboro ambulance to be sent to her of Oakwood Manor apartment without lights and siren because she was running a fever and had been dry-heaving. The patient apparently declined to be taken to a hospital; however, details of the call were not recorded.
