Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

NOV. 16

7:57 a.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances and a lone Marion firefighter — the only one who responded — were dispatched to what initially was thought to have been a head-on collision at US-56 and Ridge Rd. with at least one person needing extrication. It later was determined to have been a sideswiping with no apparent injuries and no need for extrication.

7:59 a.m. — A 65-year-old man who suffered a seizure in the 100 block of Vernon St. in Lehigh was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital. The ambulance had difficulty transmitting its status.

5:51 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with trouble breathing and a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease declined to be taken to a hospital from the 300 block of N. Sycamore St. in Peabody. Peabody and Marion ambulances and the county ambulance service’s shift supervisor all responded to the call.

NOV. 17

1:18 a.m. — A 72-year-old male surgical patient at HCH was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Salina Regional Medical Center.

3:54 a.m. — Peabody ambulance was called back to the home of the 72-year-old COPD sufferer in 300 block of N. Sycamore St. and treated him with an inhaler. The shift supervisor again responded. The patient again declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:34 a.m. — A 69-year-old woman who fell several hours earlier and developed difficulty walking and breathing was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital from Homestead Senior Residences in Marion.

9:18 a.m. — A 69-year-old man with an unreported medical problem in the 300 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:35 a.m. — Peabody and Marion ambulances again were sent to the COPD sufferer’s home in the 300 block of N. Sycamore St. This time, however, Peabody ambulance took the 72-year-old man to Newton Medical Center. Marion ambulance was told to disregard the call.

1:54 p.m. — A Marion police officer checking on the welfare of resident of the 500 block of S. Cedar St. asked for Marion firefighters to get past a locked door and Marion ambulance to check a female resident of the home. It was unclear whether the ambulance took her to St. Luke, but the county’s emergency medical service director went to the hospital immediately after the call.

3:21 p.m. — A 75-year-old Marion woman needing help getting to a car so she could be driven to a physician’s office was instead taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. The location of the call was garbled.

5:30 p.m. — A 45-year-old man who passed out at a residence near 330th and Vista Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Tampa ambulance. First responders from Lincolnville also were paged but did not appear to answer.

THURSDAY

2:04 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Newton Med.

6:45 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman who fell three hours earlier in the 300 block of Roosevelt St. in Tampa was taken by Tampa ambulance to Herington Hospital.

10:44 p.m. — A report of a fire alarm at the Men’s Quad at Tabor College could not be verified by Hillsboro firefighters.

FRIDAY

7:58 a.m. — A garbled call to Marion ambulance resulted in a patient declining to be taken to a hospital.

12:49 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman suffering a seizure in the 100 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion’s backup ambulance. The main ambulance earlier was in Hillsboro for maintenance at the time.

SATURDAY

7:15 a.m. — An 87-year-old woman having trouble breathing was transferred from Salem Home to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:05 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman with a cardiac condition and a 68-year-old man who code words indicated was suspected of having COVID-19 were taken in separate, back-to-back trips by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Newton Med. The ambulance was gone for five hours.

11:22 a.m. — A 72-year-old man suffering fainting spells in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:27 p.m. — Florence firefighters were called to an apparently authorized fire at 3rd and Marion Sts. in Florence that began burning out of control. After nearly 1½ hours, they left smoldering remains to be watched by those who had obtained authorization for burning.

3:59 p.m. — A grass fire at 370th and Upland Rds. was battled by Lost Springs and Ramona firefighters for more than an hour.

10:47 p.m. — A Florence firefighter checking the smoldering fire at 3rd and Marion Sts. called for two trucks to return. Half an hour later, firefighters again turned the controlled burn back over to the landowner.

SUNDAY

3:32 p.m. — A 77-year-old woman whose symptoms and location were garbled was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke.

6:15 p.m. — A false alarm for a fire at a residence near 240th and Jade Rds. drew firefighters from Hillsboro, Durham, and Marion along with Hillsboro ambulance. Despite being paged four additional times, only two Marion firefighters responded before Hillsboro firefighters, contacted by a relative on the scene, determined that the alarm was in error. Most responders were told to disregard while a small group of firefighters checked to ensure there were no hidden causes for the alarm.

8:59 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman experiencing dizziness at Homestead Senior Residences was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

4:21 a.m. — Florence and, an hour later, Marion firefighters joined Cedar Point firefighters in battling a fire that destroyed a house in the 300 block of Walnut St. in Cedar Point.

9:03 a.m. — Burns firefighters assisted Cassoday firefighters at a fire along the Kansas Turnpike.

10:48 a.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Salina Regional.

4:39 p.m. — A 59-year-old woman who fell outside Hilltop Manor apartments and hurt a knee was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

5:01 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who earlier was treated for a broken leg was transferred from Parkside Homes to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:40 p.m. — Immediately upon its return, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

9:07 p.m. — Five minutes after returning from Kansas Heart, Hillsboro ambulance transferred another HCH patient, this time an 81-year-old man taken to Ascension Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance finally returned to its base at 11:33 p.m.
