Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 1

7:51 a.m. — A patient at St. Luke Hospital, Marion, was transferred by Marion ambulance to an air ambulance at Newton Airport.

9:12 a.m. — A Hillsboro Community Hospital patient with atrial fibrillation was transferred to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance, which first checked to make sure Marion ambulance had returned to the county.

10:35 a.m. — A 66-year-old woman in pain from a previous back injury was taken by Tampa ambulance to Newton Medical Center from a farmhouse near K-15 and 300th Rd. A first responder from Durham helped with the call.

The patient originally was to be taken to HCH, but HCH diverted the ambulance to Newton Med. An ambulance supervisor advised the ambulance to check first with Newton Med as to whether it was accepting patients.

10:44 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman who fell in the 100 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants but stated she was uninjured and declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:57 p.m. — An unresponsive 54-year-old woman suspected of suffering a stroke at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance, accompanied by an ambulance shift supervisor from Marion.

2:53 p.m. — A rekindling of the previous day’s grass fire near 290th and Wagon Wheel Rds. was extinguished by Lincolnville, Lost Springs, and Marion firefighters, who spent more than an hour at the scene.

11:13 p.m. — A fire in a wood stove adjoining a house in the 400 block of Pine St. in Peabody quickly was extinguished by Peabody, Florence, and Burns firefighters. Peabody ambulance stood by during the fire.

An electric crew from Evergy was called to disconnect service to an meter that a Peabody firefighter said was “pretty well melted.”

The last firefighters remained on the scene for nearly 1½ hours until the electric crew arrived.

FEB. 2

No ambulance or fire calls were monitored.

THURSDAY

9:27 a.m. — A woman with a rapid heartbeat who activated a medical alarm in the 100 block of N. Wheat St. in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel checked the patient before the ambulance arrived.

11:38 a.m. — A driver reported by a passing motorist to be slumped over in a vehicle near 40th and Old Mill Rds. turned out to be a stranded motorist waiting from someone to arrive with gasoline.

A sheriff’s deputy, a Peabody police officer, and Peabody ambulance all were dispatched but could not locate the vehicle. They eventually were told by a county snowplow operator that a second vehicle had showed up and provided gasoline so the driver could continue on.

1:09 p.m. — Power lines fell onto a truck after it crashed into a utility pole in the 100 block of W. Main St. in Burns, blacking out power to the city.

Burns firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy investigated, determined no injuries had occurred, and left it to Evergy crews to repair the damage. The city was without power for nearly five hours.

FRIDAY

9:50 a.m. — A person who suffered a seizure at a residence in the 500 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by Peabody ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

2:13 p.m. — A 93-year-old woman who briefly suffered altered mental status was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro.

4:27 p.m. — A fire that destroyed a home in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody posed challenges for emergency workers, including ammunition exploding in the house, concerns about water pressure, and a resident who escaped from the house later collapsing in a street.

Peabody ambulance checked the collapsed resident and determined he was upset but otherwise fine.

Firefighters requested extra pumping of water from Hillsboro, which supplies water to Peabody.

Peabody, Florence, Burns, and Walton firefighters all battled the blaze. Peabody ambulance stood by during the fire. Walton firefighters appeared to handle most of the probing of the interior of the home.

Emergency workers remained on the scene for nearly five hours.

8:35 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

9:51 p.m. — Half an hour after leaving the scene, Peabody firefighters were called back to the destroyed house in the 600 block of N. Olive St. after a passerby reported that it had rekindled and a police officer reported flames coming from the attic.

Firefighters reported that the rekindling was minor and spent less than an hour at the scene.

10:49 p.m. — Immediately upon its return from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to the 400 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro for a 49-year-old man with a low oxygen level and rapid heartbeat. He was taken to HCH.

11:33 p.m. — A 47-year-old man, sweating and complaining of chest pains at a residence near 10th and Quail Creek Rds., declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance, preferring instead to taken by private vehicle.

SATURDAY

4:53 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman having trouble breathing and moving one of her legs after a fall at a residence in the 700 block of E. Weldon St. in Marion was taken to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

9:40 a.m. — A 75-year-old man who fell at a residence in the 600 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.

4 p.m. — A reportedly suicidal 21-year-old woman, screaming and cutting herself after possibly ingesting drugs, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from the 200 block of W. 5th St. in Florence. A sheriff’s deputy followed the ambulance to the hospital.

6:17 p.m. — A 74-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder at a residence in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were called but did not answer.

SUNDAY

6:47 a.m. — A pedestrian hit by a car on K-15 half a mile south of US-56 was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. A helicopter ambulance initially was called, and Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched to set up a landing zone. However, an ambulance supervisor canceled the helicopter.

11:18 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters shut off gas to a residence near 210th and Kanza Rds. after an odor indicating a possible leak was detected. A repair crew was summoned to check the residence’s furnace.

11:47 a.m. — An 86-year-old woman who had a seizure at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel checked the patient before the ambulance arrived.

4:19 p.m. — A woman who suffered what was reported to be a possible heart attack at an apartment in the 400 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:55 p.m. — A 64-year-old man, reported to be cold to the touch and not breathing at a residence in the 700 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro, began breathing again after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the direction of dispatchers.

Hillsboro ambulance transported him to HCH. Marion ambulance and Hillsboro firefighters, initially also called to the residence, were not needed.

MONDAY

11:09 a.m. — A fire alarm that summoned Hillsboro firefighters to Parkside Homes was determined to be a test only.

12:35 p.m. — A patient at Newton Med was transferred back to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
