6:49 p.m. — Dispatchers initially called Hillsboro ambulance to help a man who fell in the 400 block of N. Lincoln St. in Marion. When ambulance attendants questioned the call, it was changed to Marion ambulance. By that time, however, the patient already was headed to St. Luke Hospital by private vehicle. An ambulance supervisor asked dispatchers to tell the vehicle to pull over, but dispatchers had no contact with the vehicle, so the ambulance went directly to St. Luke and was not involved in transporting the patient.

7:33 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters joined McPherson County firefighters in battling a fire in a tree line on 210th Rd. just east of the Marion-McPherson County line. Lehigh firefighters, who were closer to the fire, volunteered to assist. Firefighters remained on the scene for less than an hour.

9:35 p.m. — Ditch fires along US-56 at Remington Rd. and Limestone Rd. were extinguished in less than 20 minutes by Marion firefighters.

MARCH 2

2:52 p.m. — A grass fire briefly grew out of control at 210th and Pawnee Rds. Marion firefighters were called, but most were told to disregard the call before arriving. A few remained to monitor the fire and ensure that it stayed under control.

6:05 p.m. — A fire in trees that began after what had been a controlled burn at 220th and Indigo Rds. grew out control was extinguished by Hillsboro firefighters and Lehigh firefighters, who were summoned to provide help after Hillsboro firefighters arrived. It took more than 2½ hours to put out the fire.

6:34 p.m. — With Hillsboro firefighters occupied, Marion firefighters were called to check reports of smoke near lights in the sanctuary of First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. Hillsboro’s fire chief broke off from the field fire to respond, as did two other Hillsboro firefighters who had not left for the field fire. After a half-hour search revealed no evidence of fire, Marion firefighters were sent home. Hillsboro firefighters remained and ventilated the sanctuary, spending almost two hours at the church.

6:47 p.m. — Peabody firefighters had difficulty locating a grass fire reported to be on Old Mill Rd. south of 50th Rd. They checked on a controlled burn 1½ miles away in the 600 block of E. 2nd St. and extinguished that fire, returning to quarters an hour after the initial call.

10:22 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters determined that a carbon monoxide alarm sounding at a residence in the 300 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro was a false alarm.

THURSDAY

12:02 a.m. — Peabody firefighters were called back to what was reported as a rekindling of an earlier fire in 600 block of E. 2nd St. What they found were logs that had been allowed to smolder safely in an already burned area.

12:35 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance still handling an earlier call, Marion ambulance was called for a 72-year-old man short of breath, clammy, and with leg pain after passing out at a farmhouse near 180th and Falcon Rds. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

2:46 p.m. — A Florence firefighter asked for Florence and Marion fire units to respond to a structure fire at what turned out, after some confusion, to be in the 200 block of 6th St. in Florence. Peabody firefighters and ambulance were added to the page. At the request of Marion’s fire chief, who said the fire appeared to be of suspicious origin, a fire marshal was summoned, and applications for new controlled burns in the county temporarily were denied. Most firefighters remained on the scene for 2½ hours.

4:50 p.m. — Two people were injured, one seriously, in a two-vehicle accident at K-15 and 330th Rd. A woman pinned in one vehicle was freed by Hillsboro rescue squad and taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. A teenage boy driving the other vehicle was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance. Tampa and Hillsboro firefighters also were summoned. A helicopter ambulance was dispatched as well, but that call was canceled. Most firefighters remained on the scene until 6 p.m. Tampa firefighters remained until nearly 7:30 p.m.

Marion ambulance also responded, but when Hillsboro ambulance arrived, occupants of the apartment denied calling for an ambulance. Dispatchers still had the caller on the line and could hear only background noise, with no one responding to questions. Both ambulances returned to their quarters.

11:20 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to a report that a 90-year-old man under a physician’s care had died of natural causes at a residence in the 200 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion. Ambulance attendants confirmed the death, and police remained on the scene pending a coroner’s arrival.

5:09 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman having trouble breathing and exhibiting symptoms of a stroke in the 400 block of N. Lincolnville Ave. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. A first responder from Lincolnville provided initial assessment of the patient.
