Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 5

6:44 a.m. — A Salem Home resident receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance supervisor from Marion responded to the call.

7:46 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman with hypoxia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on a physician’s orders from Salem Home to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

7:23 p.m. — An agitated 60-year-old man having trouble breathing after possibly breaking his leg was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital from the 300 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion. Police also were called.

7:33 p.m. — A rekindled controlled burn from the previous day caught a tree on fire next to hay bales on Wagonwheel Rd. between 220th and 230th Rds. Marion firefighters extinguished the fire within 15 minutes.

9:52 p.m. — A 57-year-old woman having a diabetic episode in the 100 block of S. Kansas St. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. First responders from Lincolnville evaluated the patient before the ambulance arrived.

APRIL 6

8:13 a.m. — A medical alarm wrongly indicated that a 94-year-old woman fell at her residence in the 700 block of Lawrence Ave. in Durham. A first responder from Durham spent nearly 15 minutes trying to get into the locked house before determining that it had been a false alarm. A call to Tampa ambulance was canceled.

9:25 a.m. — A 74-year-old man was transferred from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:13 a.m. — A 73-year-old man who suffered a stroke near 90th and Xavier Rds. was taken by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. First responders from Florence were paged but did not answer.

12:51 p.m. — A 19-year-old male having heart palpitations on a bench near Lakeshore Dr. and Rock Rd. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

1:02 p.m. — Peabody, Marion, and Florence firefighters were called after a motorist reported smoke but no flames coming from brush along US-50.

The fire was reported to be between mile markers that would have put it at Pawnee Rd., but when questioned, dispatchers gave the location as eight miles east of there, at 110th Rd. A few minutes later, dispatchers changed that to a mile east of there at Quail Creek Rd. As it turned out, the fire was where the mile markers had indicated it was — near Pawnee Rd.

When it was thought to be near 110th Rd., a law enforcement officer stated that the report likely came from a previous controlled burn that could not spread. Marion firefighters took that as a notice to disregard the call, but they later asked were told to stand by. Florence firefighters also took it as an order to disregard the call but were told to continue.

Once Peabody firefighters arrived, both other towns were told to disregard the call. The fire was extinguished 10 minutes after that.

1:34 p.m. — After struggling to find the location, which originally was given as a nonexistent address that would have been three blocks away, Marion ambulance was able to locate a man who fell at Homestead Senior Residences duplexes on Victory Lane in Marion and take him to St. Luke.

2:08 p.m. — Burns firefighters spent four hours assisting El Dorado firefighters in battling a blaze south of El Dorado.

6:35 p.m. — Firefighters from Lincolnville, Lost Springs, Ramona, and Tampa spent less than half an hour bringing a grass fire near 280th and Remington Rds. under control.

7:10 p.m. — An only partially alert 85-year-old woman who fell earlier at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

12:39 a.m. — A 67-year-old man who fell at a residence in the 900 block of Denver St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:53 a.m. — Peabody firefighters checked a vehicle that had overheated and briefly caught fire on US-50 at Turkey Creek Rd.

Unknown — In a call not monitored by either of the newspaper’s recording systems, Marion ambulance transported a patient from an unreported location to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

3:09 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman who had been vomiting at a residence on Random Rd. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance, which still in Wichita.

6:52 p.m. — What probably was the same patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. The ambulance did not return to Marion until 12:53 a.m.

8:39 p.m. — An 89-year-old woman complaining of head pain at Salem Home was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

FRIDAY

12:54 a.m. — Immediately upon Marion ambulance’s return, an HCH patient was transferred to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:24 p.m. — After standing by until law enforcement could ensure that it was safe to enter, a Lincolnville first responder and Marion ambulance attendants checked a woman who reportedly was choked during a domestic disturbance in the 200 block of Kansas St. in Lincolnville. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

SATURDAY

10:15 a.m. — A woman reported to be blocking access to an automated teller machine at Central National Bank in Marion because she could not walk or drive elsewhere was taken by Marion ambulance at a police officer’s request to St. Luke.

1:51 p.m. — A farmer’s routine burning of grass near 120th and Indigo Rds. grew out of control and was brought back under control in less than an hour by Peabody firefighters.

7:21 p.m. — An elderly man who fell in a garage in the 200 block of N. Jefferson St. in Hillsboro was not breathing when Hillsboro ambulance arrived. Marion ambulance and Hillsboro firefighters were called to help with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the patient was pronounced dead at 7:58 p.m.

8:24 p.m. — A fire initially reported as being south of US-56 between Marion and Marion Reservoir was determined to be a controlled burn more than five miles away near 150th and Wagonwheel Rds. A Marion firefighter who had been helping monitor the fire for land owners said it was under control and he had been told the controlled burn had reported, but dispatchers contended they had denied permission to start the fire.

8:41 p.m. — A smoke alarm at Alexanderwohl Church was determined by Goessel firefighters to be a false alarm, caused by a malfunctioning detector.

SUNDAY

12:18 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and four law enforcement officers were sent to a bloody fight at an apartment building in the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro. One of those involved was “beat up pretty good,” according to a Hillsboro officer who was first on the scene. The victim declined to be taken to a hospital by ambulance but went to HCH by private vehicle, with a Hillsboro officer following him.

5:57 a.m. — Fire in a row of trees near 110th and Indigo Rd., where a farmer had conducted a controlled burn the day before, was extinguished in less than an hour by Peabody firefighters.

3:39 p.m. — Grass on fire near 20th and Yarrow Rds. was extinguished in less than an hour by Burns firefighters.

4:12 p.m. — Lost Springs firefighters needed less than half an hour to deal with a vehicle that caught fire along US-56/77 near 340th Rd. They then remained on the scene for another hour to make sure the vehicle cooled down.

MONDAY

12:51 a.m. — Firefighters from Marion and Florence worked for nearly 1½ hours to control fire in a brome field on 160th Rd. near the Marion-Chase County line . The field apparently caught fire after a controlled burn nearby.

10:11 a.m. — An 87-year-old woman who fell and possibly broke her hip at Salem Home was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:38 p.m. — A field fire that grew out of control near 360th and Old Mill Rd. was brought back under control in little more than an hour by two Ramona firefighters with assistance from Tampa firefighters.

6:27 p.m. — Hay bales on fire in Harvey County were extinguished with the help of Peabody firefighters, who spent more than two hours helping to battle the blaze.

7:49 p.m. — Trees on fire after a controlled burn near Quail Creek and 70th Rds. were extinguished in less than an hour by Florence firefighters and a Peabody firefighter who had not gone out on the previous call but who assumed command because it was in Peabody’s fire district.

8:20 p.m. — A 72-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Hospital for a surgery consultation.

11:10 p.m. — Another out-of-control controlled burn — this one, a ditch fire at Sunflower and 110th Rds. — was extinguished within 20 minutes by Peabody firefighters, who then returned to 70th and Quail Creek Rd. to check on the tree fire there.

11:25 p.m. — An 83-year-old man who sat on a floor in the 400 block of Brairwood Lane in Hillsboro, then found he couldn’t get up to go to bed, was helped by Hillsboro ambulance attendants.
