Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 6

2:37 a.m. — A 95-year-old man with abdominal pain at Marion Assisted Living was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital. Code words often used to indicate suspected COVID-19 involvement were used in the dispatch.

8:53 a.m. — A 63-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:42 a.m.

DEC. 7

8:25 a.m. — Fuel spilled when a tank fell off a truck at Town and Country Café in Florence was cleaned up by Florence firefighters and the county emergency manager, who spent nearly 1½ hours dealing with the spill.

12:44 p.m. — A 90-year-old man who fell and hit his head outside a farmhouse near 220th and Jade Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:40 p.m. — A 20-year-old woman with head injuries after being pinned beneath a vehicle in a one-vehicle rollover near 120th and Holly Rd. was freed by Goessel firefighters and Hillsboro and Goessel rescue squad members before being taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH. Marion ambulance and Goessel first responders initially were called as well, and Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at Canada to handle potential additional calls. A pending transfer from HCH was delayed until after the accident victim could be transported.

4:03 p.m. — The HCH patient whose transfer was delayed was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

4:32 p.m. — An 87-year-old man experiencing back pain while lying on a floor in the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke. A Florence first responder made initial contact with the patient.

5:14 p.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances tied up on other calls and Peabody ambulance with only one emergency medical technician available, Tampa ambulance and the county’s ambulance director were dispatched to the 400 block of N. Walnut St. in Marion for a 63-year-old woman drifting in and out of consciousness with low blood sugar. Marion ambulance completed its previous call, canceled the call for Tampa ambulance, and arrived at 5:33 p.m., but the patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

THURSDAY

8:04 a.m. — A 57-year-old woman who slipped on a towel and could not get off a bathroom floor at an apartment in the 400 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:25 p.m. — An uninjured woman who activated a medical alarm after falling at a residence in the 500 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:35 p.m. — A woman who suffered a head injury and briefly lost consciousness in a traffic accident at US-56 and Orchard Dr. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:36 p.m. — After declining to be taken to a hospital a day earlier from the 400 block of N. Walnut St. in Marion, a now-unconscious 63-year-old woman with low blood sugar was rushed to St. Luke in life-threatening condition by Marion ambulance.

5:50 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman with respiratory issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, Newton. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:12 p.m.

6:45 p.m. — A 78-year-old man with high blood pressure at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:04 p.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances not yet completed with their assignments, Peabody ambulance was dispatched to the 900 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro for a lethargic and vomiting 78-year-old man. Hillsboro first responders were paged twice but did not answer. An emergency medical technician from Marion responded, arriving first on the scene at 7:16 p.m. Peabody ambulance arrived at 7:26 p.m. and took the patient to HCH, returning to Peabody at 8:19 p.m.

7:33 p.m. — Upon arriving at HCH with its blood-pressure patient from Parkside Homes, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a trauma patient from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

8:50 p.m. — En route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance attendants were informed that a 20-year-old trauma patient needed to be transferred from HCH to Wesley upon the ambulance’s return. At 9:02 p.m., with Hillsboro ambulance still 25 minutes away from being back in the county, the call was switched to Marion ambulance.

9:42 p.m. — With Marion ambulance en route to Wichita and Hillsboro ambulance still en route back from Wichita, Peabody and Tampa ambulances were dispatched to Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, for a 83-year-old man having trouble breathing. Hillsboro ambulance attendants quickly canceled the call, and said they would respond instead, arriving at 9:51 p.m. and transporting the patient to St. Luke.

10:46 p.m. — A 96-year-old woman who fell and hurt her legs at a residence in the 200 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:14 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still en route back from Wichita and Hillsboro ambulance not yet completed with its call, Tampa ambulance was dispatched to rendezvous in Pilsen with a private vehicle attempting to transport to St. Luke a 54-year-old woman suffering an allergic reaction. Marion ambulance, which just had turned off US-50 onto Sunflower Rd. 10 miles south of Marion in heavy fog, also was assigned to the call. It arrived at 11:36 p.m., told Tampa ambulance to disregard the call, and transported the patient to St. Luke at 11:45 p.m.

FRIDAY

7:15 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and a lone EMT in Peabody ambulance stood by but were not called to treat a potentially suicidal person at a residence in the 600 block of E. 5th St. in Peabody.

8:06 a.m. — After receiving a delayed report of smoke along US-56/77 north of the Marion roundabout, Marion and Lincolnville firefighters and Marion police spent half an hour searching but could not find a fire.

9:47 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman who lost consciousness at a farmhouse near 250th and Goldenrod Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Durham first responders were paged but did not answer.

7 p.m. — Peabody ambulance responded after a medical alert accidentally was activated by a resident of the 500 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody.

7:30 p.m. — A 79-year-old man in the 900 block of S. Ash St. was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

9:43 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman receiving oxygen was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:28 a.m.

SATURDAY

9:35 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transported to HCH an 18-year-old girl who took an overdose of prescribed medication during a domestic quarrel at a farmhouse near 230th and Diamond Rd.

12:20 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:09 p.m.

4:53 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman who fell and hurt her back and ankle at Marion Assisted Living declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

SUNDAY

1:40 p.m. — An 88-year-old man who fell and cut his head at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

2:52 p.m. — A woman and a child involved in a domestic quarrel in the 500 block of N. Ohio St. in Burns were evaluated by Burns first responders and Marion ambulance attendants but were not taken to a hospital.

3:23 p.m. — Lincolnville firefighters determined that an oil change, not a fire or a leak, caused smoking at a pump jack on an oil well near US-77 and 240th Rd.
