Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 27

1:11 a.m. — A disoriented 71-year-old diabetic male who repeatedly fell at a mobile home in the 600 block of E. Marion Ave. in Goessel was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance, which remained out of service until 7:28 a.m. for decontamination. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

9:14 a.m. — A 76-year-old man unable to get out of a chair in the 100 block of S. Maple St. in Peabody was taken to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. A lone emergency medical technician in Peabody ambulance assisted as a first responder.

10:22 a.m. — Although no injuries were reported, dispatchers sent Hillsboro firefighters, Hillsboro rescue squad members, and — because Hillsboro ambulance still was en route to Wichita — Marion ambulance to a one-vehicle rollover near 140th and Indigo Rds. Rescue squad members helped free an uninjured occupant of the vehicle even though initial reports were that no one was entrapped.

1:13 p.m. — A 57-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Peabody Health and Rehab was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:49 p.m.

DEC. 28

12:37 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fell at a residence in the 1400 block of Denver St. in Marion was lifted by Marion firefighters and ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

6:07 p.m. — Bethesda Home reported that no personnel were available to check on activation of a medical pendant, reportedly by a man at one of the home’s apartments in the 300 block of Meadow Ln. in Goessel. Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched. Twelve minutes later, however, the ambulance call was canceled after dispatchers were told that the person who supposedly activated the alarm was not at home. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

6:44 p.m. — An uninjured 78-year-old man who fell at a residence in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by EMTs from Peabody ambulance. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

6:44 p.m. — A dehydrated 55-year-old woman not feeling well in the 700 block of Lawrence St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

THURSDAY

3:42 a.m. — A man in his 40s reported by a motel manager to be throwing up at Country Inn Motel in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Two sheriff’s deputies also responded.

11:54 a.m. — A 40-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy involved in a semi-trailer accident in which a modular home in transit was blown off US-77 just north of Florence were checked by Marion ambulance attendants at the request of sheriff’s deputies. Radio transmissions to the ambulance crew never stated the location of the accident. Both people declined to be taken to a hospital.

3:07 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman having chills, hot flashes, and abnormal breathing at Oakwood Manor Apartments in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:08 p.m. — A medical pendant activated at a farmhouse near 300th and Falcon Rd. was determined by a lone EMT in Tampa ambulance to be a false alarm. A call to Marion ambulance, responding because Hillsboro ambulance was tied up on another call, was canceled. First responders from Durham were paged but did not answer.

3:29 p.m. — What was reported as a grass fire near 180th and Mustang Rds. was determined by Marion firefighters to be rekindled controlled burning of a brush pile.

3:58 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to NMC. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:28 p.m.

9:35 p.m. — A 79-year-old man with influenza A was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:48 p.m.

FRIDAY

3:11 a.m. — A 90-year-old woman with unspecified medical issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Peabody Health and Rehab to NMC. A lone EMT in Peabody ambulance also responded to the call.

4:51 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman who fell at a rental home in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

12:31 p.m. — A 90-year-old man having trouble breathing at a residence in the 400 block of W. 6th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. A first responder from Florence and the county’s ambulance director also responded to the call.

3:09 p.m. — After a series of telephone calls among dispatchers and Hillsboro and Peabody ambulance attendants, Hillsboro ambulance announced that it was going to Peabody Health and Rehab to assist personnel there. Upon arrival, ambulance attendants asked for further assistance from Peabody ambulance but later canceled the request. Eventually, Hillsboro ambulance reported that a patient declined to be transported to a hospital. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:54 p.m.

3:14 p.m. — HCH inquired about the availability of an ambulance to transfer a patient in critical condition to intensive care at NMC. Medics with Hillsboro ambulance, still en route to Peabody, had medics with Marion ambulance check with the hospital by telephone. No further information about the potential call was broadcast until Hillsboro ambulance was asked upon its return to Hillsboro to call dispatchers. When at 6:28 p.m. Marion ambulance returned to the county from a call to Andover, Hillsboro ambulance went to HCH to transfer the patient. The transfer began at 6:50 p.m., 3½ hours after the initial request. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:09 p.m.

3:49 p.m. — With the HCH transfer still pending, a 76-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Medical Center in Andover. The ambulance returned to the county at 6:28 p.m. and to Marion at 6:55 p.m.

8:46 p.m. — Before Hillsboro ambulance arrived, a caller reported that a nauseated 68-year-old woman who passed out at Alexanderfeld Mennonite Church would be taken to Salem Home by private vehicle.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

1:32 a.m. — A semi-conscious 70-year-old man at a farmhouse near 240th and Indigo Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3 a.m. — An uninjured 95-year-old woman who fell at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was helped up by an EMT with Peabody ambulance. A call for Hillsboro ambulance was canceled.

10:52 a.m. — A 60-year-old woman who might have suffered a stroke at an apartment in the 100 block of W. Santa Fe St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:22 a.m. — With Marion ambulance still handling its Santa Fe St. call, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched in the 400 block of N. Lincoln St. in Marion and took to St. Luke an unconscious 32-year-old woman whose eyes had rolled back in her head.

3:50 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman who suffered a stroke was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:29 p.m.

NEW YEAR’S DAY

9:30 a.m. — An 86-year-old man who suffered a stroke a week earlier was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from Salem Home in Hillsboro.

1:47 p.m. — A 40-year-old woman who may have overdosed at a residence in the 100 block of W. 4th St. in Florence was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance. First responders from Florence were paged but did not answer. Florence firefighters were called to help lift the patient. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded, as well, but medics later were told that a second ambulance wasn’t needed. Dispatchers reported that whoever called in the emergency left the residence in an attempt to locate someone to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation though there was no evidence in transmissions that CPR was administered.

3:13 p.m. — A 22-year-old man with blood pressure issues was transferred from HCH to Kansas Health Hospital, Wichita. The transfer initially was assigned to Hillsboro ambulance, which delayed its response by 18 minutes until Marion ambulance returned to the county from its call to Newton. The response then was delayed further when medics aboard Hillsboro ambulance, which had been at HCH for six minutes,, opted to respond instead to a subsequent call that had been assigned to Marion ambulance. Marion ambulance was redirected to Hillsboro to handle the transfer. However, at 3:56 p.m., a mile away from HCH, ambulance attendants were told that alternative transportation had been arranged and that they would not be needed.

3:27 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters briefly were summoned when a fire alarm at a residence in the 600 block of S. Lincoln St. accidentally was activated.

3:36 p.m. — A partially unresponsive 74-year-old woman being treated for cancer was taken from the 200 block of W. 8th St. in Florence to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado, by Hillsboro ambulance. The call originally was assigned to Marion ambulance, which had just returned to the county from a call to Newton. However, medics aboard Hillsboro ambulance opted to divert from a patient transfer and handle the call instead, arriving at 3:56 p.m.,

4:49 p.m. — A 78-year-old man with a bleeding head wound and receiving hospice care for dementia in the 100 block of W. 6th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

MONDAY

11:01 a.m. — A 99-year-old woman apparently activated a medical alarm accidentally at a farmhouse near 20th and Wagon Wheel Rd. First responders from Burns reported that she declined to be taken to a hospital, but Peabody ambulance had to continue and get a signature on a form indicating her refusal to be transported.
