Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JAN. 31

12:36 a.m. — A 90-year-old man heaving and not breathing normally at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

10:02 a.m. — A 15-year-old girl having seizures at Goessel High School was taken to Wesley Medical Center by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. A first responder from Goessel arrived 12 minutes before the ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:57 p.m.

1:38 p.m. — A fire alarm at Peabody Health and Rehab was canceled five minutes at Peabody firefighters were notified.

3:32 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:08 p.m.

4:01 p.m. — A diabetic 64-year-old woman with low blood sugar and not responding normally in the 400 block of N. Walnut St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

8:08 p.m. — A 60-year-old man dizzy and feeling faint near 320th and Diamond Rds. was taken by Tampa ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. A Durham first responder helped.

FEB. 1

7:20 a.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s Cedar Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been false.

11:06 a.m. — An 84-year-old with respiratory failure was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:22 p.m.

1:20 p.m. — Although St. Luke was willing to wait for Marion ambulance to return, Hillsboro ambulance volunteered to transfer from St. Luke to NMC a 94-year-old woman with abdominal pain. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:29 p.m.

5:37 p.m. — An alarm about a gas leak at St. Mark Catholic Church activity center in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters to be false.

6:23 p.m. — A 49-year-old man with low blood sugar at Western Associates in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

9:02 p.m. — A 78-year-old man not feeling well at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Dispatchers initially sent the ambulance to what was reported to be an unresponsive person at 200 Willow Glen Ln. instead of less apparently ill person at 200 Willow Rd. The error was corrected eight minutes after the initial dispatch.

THURSDAY

12:15 a.m. — Another fire alarm at Tabor College’s Cedar Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be false.

10:41 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman who may have suffered a stroke at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:06 p.m. — A 72-year-old man having trouble breathing in the 200 block of N. Buller St. in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. A first responder from Goessel assisted until the ambulance arrived 19 minutes after the initial dispatch.

FRIDAY

9:47 a.m. — A 62-year-old man who repeatedly fell at a residence in the 300 block of N. 3rd St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:13 a.m. — A 62-year-old man with trouble breathing at a different address in the 200 block of N. Buller St. in Goessel was taken by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance was diverted there from Dole Veterans Affairs Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:13 p.m.

10:50 p.m. — A 54-year-old man who may have suffered a seizure at a residence in the 600 block of Cemetery Ln. in Burns declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders and, briefly, Peabody ambulance also were dispatched.

SATURDAY

6:08 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fell and was bleeding from a head wound at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:25 a.m. — After a telephone call with dispatchers, Hillsboro ambulance requested a sheriff’s deputy join the ambulance in responding to a reportedly manic patient at Bethesda Home in Goessel. An hour later, the ambulance transferred the patient to HCH.

9:25 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman vomiting at Indian Guide Terrace Apartments in Peabody was taken to HCH by Peabody ambulance.

12:13 p.m. — A 75-year-old man who felt ill and pulled over at the western junction of US-56 and K-15 while en route to a hospital was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:14 p.m. — As medics were arriving at HCH, they were told to go next to Salem Home to transfer, at a physician’s request, a 78-year-old woman who earlier had suffered chest pains. She was taken to HCH.

4:06 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Dole VA Hospital. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:35 p.m.

9:52 p.m. — An initial report of four dogs attacking two juveniles at Family Dollar / Dollar Tree in Peabody proved false. Just two dogs and no kids reportedly were involved. Calls to Marion and Peabody ambulance were canceled.

SUNDAY

12:54 p.m. — An 89-year-old man having trouble breathing at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Dispatchers initially gave the call to Hillsboro ambulance and said the patient was at Parkside Homes.

7:04 p.m. — A 72-year-old man having chills and trouble breathing at Indian Guide Terrance was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Peabody ambulance was paged but did not respond. Medics initially asked for help from Marion ambulance but later canceled the call.

MONDAY

7:18 a.m. — A 64-year-old man who fell at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:58 a.m. — A 68-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion

12:17 p.m. — Ramona firefighters spent half an hour tending to hot spots remaining from a controlled burn the day before on 360th Rd. between Mustang and Nighthawk Rds.

1:41 p.m. — A grass fire threatening to spread to another landowner’s property near 190th and Quail Creek Rds. was battled for about an hour by Marion firefighters.

2:43 p.m. — A Goessel firefighter who was at Bethesda Home at the time canceled a call originating from a malfunctioning alarm system there.

2:47 p.m. — A St. Luke patient with a urology emergency was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:54 p.m.

5:16 p.m. — Marion firefighters stood by for 45 minutes as a precaution after a natural gas leak was reported in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion.

8:49 p.m. — An 84-year-old man unable to get up after falling from a tractor two days earlier was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from a farmhouse near 230th and Chisholm Trail Rds.
