Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 18

7:49 a.m. — A 59-year-old woman with back pain was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, from the 400 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody. A lone emergency medical technician aboard Peabody ambulance also responded. He arrived 10 minutes before Hillsboro ambulance, which returned to Hillsboro at 10:05 a.m.

2:38 p.m. — An 84-year-old man with severe anemia was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:48 p.m.

10:47 p.m. — A fire alarm at Harms Hall on the Tabor College campus was found by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

APRIL 19

1:32 a.m. — A 76-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:51 a.m.

10:51 a.m. — An 86-year-old man who fell in his garage in the 1000 block of E. Main St. in Marion was helped up by a police officer and declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:43 a.m. — A 24-year-old woman who accidentally overdosed on pain medication in the 100 block of W. Jefferson St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion police also responded.

12:25 p.m. — An 87-year-old man with a brain bleed was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:54 p.m.

1:17 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance en route to Wichita, Marion ambulance was dispatched to the 600 block of E. Marion St. in Goessel for a 52-year-old man having chest pains that were not relieved by nitroglycerin tablets. Goessel first responders did not answer a page, which accidentally may have gone to Peabody ambulance instead. The county ambulance director also responded, arriving 17 minutes after the initial call and 5 minutes before Marion ambulance, which eventually took the patient to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:29 p.m.

1:59 p.m. — Peabody ambulance initially was instructed to stand by in Canada while other ambulances were out of the county but later was told that standing by would not be necessary.

2:58 p.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched to the 200 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody for a report that a elderly woman had died at her home. The ambulance director also responded.

5:57 p.m. — Firefighters reported what appeared to be a dust storm unlike any they had seen before. Wind damage to a greenhouse and a shed near 120th and Diamond Rds. also was reported.

6:57 p.m. — Hail to size of golf balls was reported in Peabody.

7:04 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was told to stand by near the Hillsboro Ampride store after dispatchers received a report that a suspicious person who appeared likely to pass out. Police arrived, and the ambulance was told to stand down.

9:15 p.m. — A surgical patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:57 p.m.

10:54 p.m. — With Marion ambulance out of the county, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a 30-year-old woman having a seizure in the 300 block of Locust St. in Marion. The ambulance director arrived 11 minutes after the initial call, 5 minutes before Hillsboro ambulance did. The woman was taken to St. Luke.

THURSDAY

5:30 p.m. — Tampa ambulance, Hillsboro ambulance and rescue squad, and Durham firefighters and first responders were dispatched to Douglas and Side Sts. in Durham in response to an automated report of an injury accident. However, the first firefighter on the scene determined that the alarm accidentally had been triggered, and the response was canceled.

FRIDAY

11:09 a.m. — An unconscious 46-year-old man who may have overdosed at a home near 150th and Eagle Rds. was taken on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel firefighters helped lift the patient. Marion ambulance also responded to the call. Hillsboro ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:06 p.m.

12:42 p.m. — About five gallons of gasoline that spilled from a vehicle into a gutter in the 400 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was washed down by Hillsboro firefighters.

4:12 p.m. — Burns firefighters responded to a grass fire at an unspecified location in Butler County.

10:24 p.m. — A 20-year-old Tabor College student suffering a seizure on campus declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:31 p.m. — Florence firefighters were dispatched to a report of a malfunctioning heater at a home in the 300 block of W. 11th St. in Florence.

SATURDAY

6:39 a.m. — An emotionally disturbed 68-year-old man on US-50 near Wagon Wheel Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:51 p.m. — A fire alarm at Alexanderwohl Church was determined by Goessel firefighters to have been a false alarm.

10:19 p.m. — Hillsboro storm sirens accidentally were activated.

10:37 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was told to stand by to deal with a possibly suicidal person near Cooperative Grain and Supply in Hillsboro but soon afterward was told by police to stand down.

SUNDAY

12:36 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman with low blood sugar who fell and hurt her ankle at Indian Guide Terrance Apartments in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. A lone EMT aboard Peabody ambulance also responded. Hillsboro ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:03 a.m. but remained out of service without explanation for an additional hour.

11:39 a.m. — A Burns firefighter investigated a report of tires and poles on fire near 20th and Wagon Wheel Rds. but did not need to call for additional firefighters.

12:56 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Salina Regional Health Center. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:42 p.m.

5:21 p.m. — An 82-year-old woman with abdominal pain was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke from the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro.

MONDAY

7:45 a.m. — A fire alarm at Cedar Hall on the Tabor College campus was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

8:21 a.m. — A 15-year-old boy having trouble moving, unable to talk or drink, and with dilated pupils at Peabody-Burns High School declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance, whose attendants reported that they were not allowed to approach the patient. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched but was called off.

5:10 p.m. — A 91-year-old man who had blood tests earlier in the day was transferred from Parkside Homes to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance after test results came in.

7:20 p.m. — A woman not breathing effectively at a residence on Tanglewood Dr. in Marion received cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Marion ambulance arrived to take her to a Wichita hospital. Hillsboro ambulance and the county ambulance director also responded to the call. Marion ambulance returned to Marion at 10:38 p.m.
