Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week on the newspaper’s backup scanner:

AUG. 8

8:00 a.m. — A man in his 20s having a seizure at Container Services in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

AUG. 9

12:04 p.m. — A 19-year-old man who was hit in the head on a branch near a farm shop near 270th and Timber Rds. was airlifted to an out-of-county hospital. Marion ambulance, Lincolnville first responders and firefighters, the county ambulance director, a Tampa emergency medical technician, and (briefly) Hillsboro ambulance responded to the call.

7:31 p.m. — Florence, Peabody and Burns firefighters battled a structure fire for nearly 2½ hours a mile south of Burns on US-77 in Butler County.

8:48 p.m. — A 64-year-old man having a seizure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Bethesda Homes in Goessel to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. A Goessel first responder provided initial evaluation of the patient. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:26 p.m.

THURSDAY

12:51 a.m. — Two motorists — one with back pain and the other a nosebleed — injured in a traffic accident near US-56/K-15/Holly Rd. were taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance initially also dispatched but was told to stand down.

7:34 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman vomiting blood at a home in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:39 a.m.

12:35 p.m. — A porch fire at an unoccupied residence in the 200 block of W. 4th St. in Florence was extinguished within four minutes by Florence firefighters.

1:44 p.m. — At a law enforcement officer’s request, a driver acting strangely at a Kansas Department of Transportation parking lot on N. Cedar St. in Marion was checked by Marion ambulance attendants and taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

FRIDAY

5:21 p.m. — A 61-year-old man with a broken hip was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 7:22 p.m.

8:07 p.m. — An 85-year-old man with a 103.9-degree fever and trouble walking at a residence in the 400 block of E. Marion St. in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:07 p.m.

SATURDAY

9:26 p.m. — A 26-year-old woman who fell and cut her arm in the 500 block of E. Centennial St. in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder also answered the call.

1:19 p.m. — A baler on fire in a roadway near 350th and Xavier Rds. was extinguished within 40 minutes by Lost Springs and Morris County firefighters.

2:14 p.m. — An unresponsive 98-year-old woman in the 400 block of Locust St. in Marion was pronounced dead by medics from Marion and Hillsboro ambulances.

2:32 p.m. — After initial confusion over her location, a Marion firefighter found a 30-year-old female mail carrier, possibly suffering from heat exhaustion, at Cedar and Denver Sts. in Marion. Tampa ambulance initially was dispatched, but a lone ambulance attendant from the call on Locust St. and first responders from Hillsboro were sent instead. Tampa ambulance was told to stand by in Pilsen until 3:13 p.m. in case of additional calls. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

8:52 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman throwing up at a home in the 400 block of E. Marion St. in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:11 p.m.

SUNDAY

12:02 p.m. — A 94-year-old woman who fell and suffered chest pains at a home in the 600 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.

2:02 p.m. — A medical alarm at Town and Country Café in Florence was determined by Marion ambulance to have been accidentally activated.

2:05 p.m. — A 29-year-old man suffering a seizure at a residence in the 400 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Pilsen until 2:31 p.m. in case of additional calls.

5:17 p.m. — An 82-year-old woman feeling faint at a farmhouse near 170th and Eagle Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Instead, the patient told medics she would go by private vehicle to St. Luke.

MONDAY

12:17 a.m. — A 91-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 300 block of W. 11th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10:01 p.m. — An 85-year-old man bleeding from his nose and cheek at a home in the 400 block of Briarwood Ln. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
