Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 12

1:12 a.m. — Bleeding in her 29th week of pregnancy, a woman in the 100 block of E. Maria St. in Lehigh was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:38 a.m. — A woman bleeding profusely in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

5:39 a.m. — A 90-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke at a farmhouse near 190th and Kanza Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:04 a.m. — A 64-year-old woman with chest pains at a residence in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:43 a.m. — An 89-year-old man with an aneurism was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

12:55 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters turned off natural gas to a meter that was struck in the 200 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro and remained there until an Atmos Energy crew arrived.

4:38 p.m. — An ailing 78-year-old man stuck in a chair without power in the 400 block of Elm St. in Marion was helped up but declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

6:48 p.m. — Although Marion ambulance initially was dispatched, an 88-year-old woman with vertigo was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

DEC. 13

8:34 a.m. — The ailing 78-year-old who previously was stuck in a chair at a residence in the 400 block of Elm St. in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke on a physician’s orders.

10:38 a.m. — An 80-year-old man with a coronary condition was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:34 p.m.

11:24 a.m. — A 43-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter, trapped in a car after it rear-ended a semi-trailer truck stopped by a flagger in a construction zone, were declared dead at the scene by first responders from Lincolnville and an emergency medical technician from Tampa ambulance. Marion and Lincolnville firefighters and rescue squad members remained on the scene until 4:19 p.m. With Marion ambulance on another call, Tampa and Hillsboro ambulances, a Dickinson County ambulance from Herington, and a helicopter ambulance all were called but told to stand down before arriving.

11:58 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance attempted to transfer a St. Luke patient to Wesley but returned to Hillsboro at 1:51 p.m. after no bed was available for the patient.

1:37 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman ill for several days at a residence in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance.

3:06 p.m. — With Marion ambulance returning to the county, Hillsboro ambulance returned to St. Luke to complete the transfer canceled earlier. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:51 p.m.

4:35 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters spent less than 20 minutes putting water on an already extinguished but still smoldering ditch fire on US-56 near Alamo Rd.

11:01 p.m. — Although Marion ambulance initially was dispatched, a 68-year-old man with a bowel obstruction was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

THURSDAY

7:46 a.m. — A lethargic 73-year-old man, possibly with diabetic issues, was taken by Tampa ambulance to St. Luke from a farmhouse near 330th and Remington Rds. Three Ramona firefighters helped lift the patient.

11:48 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance tied up at the ambulance service’s office in Marion, Marion ambulance was sent to Bethesda Home in Goessel to transfer a 79-year-old woman with cardiac issues to Wesley. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The initial call was delayed after a telephone call from Bethesda to dispatchers was disconnected. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:08 p.m.

2:38 p.m. — A grass fire, described as minimal, on US-50 at Bluestem Rd. was extinguished in less than 10 minutes by Florence firefighters.

3:12 p.m. — A 76-year-old man needing gall bladder surgery was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to McPherson Center for Health.

4:42 p.m. — An 84-year-old man requiring vascular surgery was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.

7:11 p.m. — A possibly intoxicated man who could not get off the floor at a residence in the 200 block of S. Church St. in Burns was helped up by Burns first responders and taken by Marion ambulance to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado.

FRIDAY

8:54 a.m. — An 18-year-old girl who overdosed at a rental home in the 400 block of Grandview St. in Florence successfully was revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation administered by a caller before Marion ambulance and Florence firefighters arrived. The patient then declined to be taken to a hospital. Hillsboro ambulance responded as well, but attendants were told to stand down.

5:14 p.m. — A 73-year-old man, initially unconscious because of diabetic problems at a farmhouse near US-56 and Nighthawk Rd., declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:12 p.m. — A 73-year-old man who suffered a stroke was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

9:10 p.m. — Florence firefighters, Peabody rescue squad, and Marion ambulance were dispatched to a three-vehicle accident west of the US-50/77 roundabout. Peabody ambulance also was paged but did not initially answer. Hillsboro ambulance and a Harvey County ambulance also were summoned, but all five of the people involved declined to be taken to a hospital before any of the additional ambulances reached the accident. Florence firefighters remained on the scene to control traffic until 11 p.m.

SATURDAY

9:33 p.m. — After being advised by a Veterans Affairs hot line to call an ambulance, a 73-year-old man with cardiac symptoms at a home in the 300 block of W. 8th St. in Florence was taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance.

11:35 p.m. — A fire alarm at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been a false alarm.

SUNDAY

12:08 p.m. — A 74-year-old woman who fell and hurt her leg at a farmhouse near 330th and Eagle Rds. was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by Tampa ambulance. A Durham first responder evaluated the patient before the ambulance arrived.

4:24 p.m. — A 27-year-old man having trouble breathing and speaking at a home in the 100 block of S. Church St. in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders provided initial evaluation of the patient.

7:02 p.m. — A 62-year-old patient with a heart issue was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

MONDAY

1:19 a.m. — A 44-year-old woman with back pain at a home in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was taken to McPherson Center for Health by Marion ambulance.

2:17 a.m. — En route to McPherson, Marion ambulance attendants noticed an elderly man slumped over the steering wheel of a car parked on the wrong side of the road on US-56 near Pawnee Rd. Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to check the man, but he had simply pulled over because he was tired.

4:21 a.m. — A diabetic 28-year-old man who may have taken drugs or medication at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

7:27 a.m. — A caller at Diamond Fitness in Marion could not attempt CPR on an unresponsive man because an exercise bicycle had fallen on top of the man when he collapsed. Marion ambulance attendants and Marion firefighters arrived within five minutes and started CPR at 7:33 p.m. Hillsboro ambulance attendants joined them five minutes later, but the man was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m.

2:02 p.m. — A 31-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:52 p.m.

2:42 p.m. — Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody firefighters were dispatched along with Marion ambulance to what was reported to be a hay barn on fire near 190th and Pawnee Rds. Upon investigation, firefighters determined that the fire was an unreported controlled burn and that no structures were endangered.

2:47 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance out of the county, Tampa ambulance having only one attendant, and Peabody ambulance out of service, Marion ambulance was redirected from the fire call along with the lone Tampa ambulance attendant to the 100 block of N. B St. in Ramona for an elderly woman feeling ill. Delayed by a train, the ambulance followed the Tampa EMT to an alternate rail crossing and took the woman to St. Luke.

7:52 p.m. — An 82-year-old man who fell, hurt his arm, and could not get up at a home in the 500 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
