Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
AUG. 27
1:38 a.m. — A 42-year-old man, possibly suffering a stroke, was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:14 a.m.
1:45 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for an uninjured 82-year-old man who fell at the Cenex station in Peabody, but the call was canceled after a Peabody police officer reported that the man did not want an ambulance.
AUG. 28
12:53 a.m. — Goessel firefighters, Hillsboro ambulance, and an ambulance supervisor were dispatched to Bethesda Home in Goessel, where an odor of natural gas had been detected and several of an estimated 40 occupants of the building were reporting headaches. Although firefighters could smell what was described as a slight odor, monitors detected no leaks. Firefighters remained at the nursing home until an Atmos Energy crew and maintenance staff arrived to perform further checks.
1:46 a.m. — A 31-year-old man in pain after a stroke and surgery several months earlier was taken by the county’s backup ambulance, temporarily based in Marion, to St. Luke from a home on Lois Ln. at Marion County Lake.
9:44 p.m. — A 73-year-old man with an unknown medical issue in the 300 block of C St. in Ramona declined to be taken to a hospital by Tampa ambulance. An off-duty ambulance attendant also responded to the call.
THURSDAY
9:44 a.m. — A suddenly confused 85-year-old man at a residence in the 600 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:46 a.m. — Still in Marion, Hillsboro ambulance was assigned to transfer a 77-year-old man with appendicitis from Hillsboro Community Hospital to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:56 p.m.
12:46 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance on its way to McPherson, Marion ambulance was sent to Casey’s General Store in Hillsboro where a 4-year-old girl became dizzy and fell. An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro arrived first and canceled the call but asked for police to contact her.
4:58 p.m. — A 25-year-old man with low blood sugar at a residence in the 200 block of N. 1st St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
9:08 p.m. — Peabody firefighters were dispatched after flashes of light and sparks were reported on US-50 west of Peabody and power to much of the city failed. Evergy workers speculated that the flashes and blackout were caused by a raccoon on a power line. Power was restored by 9:51 p.m.
9:33 p.m. — What was reported as an unattended brush fire at Marion County Lake was determined by Marion firefighters to be contained burning of a county brush pile near where a world-record 1,272 marshmallows were roasted simultaneously in 2012. Firefighters extinguished the file within 30 minutes.
11:33 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with a kidney stone at a residence in the 200 block of Locust St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
FRIDAY
6 a.m. — A 60-year-old woman who fell at a Parkside Homes apartment in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters were called to help lift the woman.
2:37 p.m. — A lethargic and confused 94-year-old woman at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
2:59 p.m. — A woman who drove a car off Upland Rd., through a fence, and 100 yards into a field before hitting a bale of hay at Marion Municipal Airport declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance but was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
4:28 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:39 p.m.
5:33 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by at a Centre High School football game until 8:24 p.m.
6:45 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:32 p.m. at Warrior Stadium during a football game. The ambulance reported examining a possible hand injury at 7:43 p.m., but the patient declined to be taken to a hospital.
8:25 p.m. — A 7-year-old girl with pneumonia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:10 p.m.
SATURDAY
1:34 p.m. — Rescue boats from Hillsboro Fire Department were dispatched to Marion Reservoir for a pontoon boat stranded near Hillsboro Cove after its motor wouldn’t start. Firefighters spent 1½ hours locating and towing the boat to a ramp at Cottonwood Point, where it had been launched. An ambulance supervisor also responded but was not needed.
1:39 p.m. — A 53-year-old man with a fracture was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:35 p.m.
4:16 p.m. — The county’s backup ambulance, temporarily based in Marion, transferred an HCH patient to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 7:17 p.m.
5:55 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 8:33 p.m. at Joel Wiens Stadium for a Tabor College football game.
9:56 p.m. — A 2-month-old baby who stopped breathing for three minutes at a residence in the 300 block of S. 1st St. in Marion was examined by Marion ambulance attendants. It is not clear whether the baby was taken to a hospital.
11:20 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were summoned for a false alarm caused by a cooking mishap at a Tabor College dormitory in the 200 block of S. Madison St.
SUNDAY
5:11 a.m. — An 82-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:02 a.m.
10:25 a.m. — The county’s backup ambulance, temporarily based in Marion, transferred a patient from St. Luke back to a residence in Peabody from which he had been taken to the hospital Thursday morning.
8:27 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was asked by a deputy to go to Westview Manor in Peabody to assess injuries that may have occurred during a fight there. The ambulance transferred a patient to NMC Health. It returned to Hillsboro at 10:16 p.m.
