Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
SEPT. 3
3:21 a.m. — A 70-year-old man with back pain was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:33 a.m.
10:40 a.m. — Natural gas flowing to a meter struck by a vehicle in the 400 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was shut off by Marion firefighters pending arrival of an Atmos Energy crew.
1:59 p.m. — Fire in a cornfield near 20th and Remington Rds. was extinguished within an hour by Peabody firefighters. Firefighters from Burns and Whitewater also were dispatched but were told to disregard the call before they arrived.
7:16 p.m. — A 48-year-old man suffering seizures at a rental home in the 1000 block of Hudson St. in Marion was returned by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, where he had been a patient earlier in the day.
9:49 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman with weakness and kidney failure was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Salina Regional Health Center. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:38 a.m.
SEPT. 4
12:28 a.m. — A lethargic 2-year-old boy at a home in the 100 block of Floral Dr. in Marion was examined by Hillsboro ambulance attendants, but they did not take him to a hospital.
9:27 a.m. — Natural gas to a broken pipe discovered by plumbers outside Bethesda Home in Goessel was shut off by Goessel firefighters pending arrival of a Kansas Gas Service crew.
10:07 a.m. — A 68-year-old man suffering diarrhea for three days was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from a Victory Ln. duplex in Marion.
6:28 p.m. — An unresponsive 43-year-old man throwing up blood at Westview Manor in Peabody was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, to which it was diverted from NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:25 p.m.
THURSDAY
7:54 a.m. — Two people involved in a two-vehicle accident near Centre school at US-56/77 and 310th Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Marion and Lincolnville firefighters helped direct traffic and clean up debris. Tampa ambulance was dispatched, as well, but the call was canceled before the ambulance arrived.
10:43 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman with an unspecified condition was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health.
12:39 p.m. — Still enroute back from McPherson, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for an elderly person with chest pains at a home in the 200 block of S. Eisenhower St. in Hillsboro. However, the patient was taken to a hospital by private vehicle before the ambulance arrived.
5:56 p.m. — Marion ambulance began to stand by at Warrior Stadium in Marion for a football game.
6:36 p.m. — Called away from the game, Marion ambulance was dispatched to a home on Lois Ln. at Marion County Lake for a 76-year-old man with cancer who was weak, not eating, and had fallen earlier in the day. He was taken to St. Luke.
FRIDAY
5:04 a.m. — The 76-year-old man earlier taken to St. Luke was transferred by Marion ambulance to Dole Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:12 a.m.
6:22 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by until 8:25 p.m. for a football game at Centre High School.
6:33 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:38 p.m. for a football game at Peabody-Burns High School.
6:35 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 9:29 p.m. for a football game at Joel Wiens Stadium in Hillsboro.
8:39 p.m. — Dispatchers told HCH that a 42-year-old woman with alcohol intoxication and delirium tremens would have to wait for nearly an hour until football standby ended before being transferred to a Wichita hospital. An EagleMed helicopter was called to transport the patient instead.
11:35 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a medical alarm activated by an 85-year-old woman at a farm on 120th Rd. between Holly and Indigo Rds. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
SATURDAY
5:55 p.m. — At a deputy sheriff’s request, Marion ambulance was sent to Hillsboro Cove at Marion Reservoir, where a man repeatedly backed a vehicle into a waste dumping station and then slumped over his vehicle’s wheel. The man declined to be taken to a hospital.
8:35 p.m. — People involved in a fight at a home near 190th and Jade Rds. were checked at a deputy sheriff’s request but declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.
SUNDAY
12:54 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fell and hurt her back at a house in the 700 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.
5:54 p.m. — Calls first to Hillsboro ambulance and then to Marion ambulance for a 70-year-old woman who fell at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody were canceled after the woman was helped up by others
11:52 p.m. — An 87-year-old man who fell at Marion Assisted Living declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
11:59 p.m. — At a firefighter’s request, Tampa firefighters were dispatched to a farm near K-15 and 330th Rd. for a mostly extinguished fire involving a semi-trailer tractor. The fire was out within 20 minutes.
MONDAY
10:50 a.m. — A 42-year-old woman not feeling well at a home in the 300 block of N. Cincinnati St. in Burns was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders evaluated the patient before the ambulance arrived. The ambulance returned — not to Marion, but to Hillsboro — at 1:56 p.m.
1:29 p.m. — An uncommunicative 64-year-old man, possibly with sepsis, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to HCH.
2:38 p.m. — A 19-year-old girl suffering an allergic reaction to new medication was taken by Marion ambulance, still in Hillsboro at the time, to St. Luke from a rental home in the 1000 block of Hudson St. in Marion. The county’s ambulance director, based in Marion, also responded to the call.
4:10 p.m. — An ailing 70-year-old woman at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Ambulance attendants attempted to provide patient information to St. Luke by radio but received no answer.
4:38 p.m. — A firefighter reported a previously unreported burn endangering buildings at Ohio St. and Cemetery Ln. near the Burns fire station. Firefighters controlled the blaze in less than 10 minutes.
5:39 p.m. — The former Peabody ambulance, now based in Hillsboro, stood by until 7:34 p.m. in Goessel for a football game.
5:53 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 7:38 p.m. for a football game at Warrior Stadium.
7:29 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman with pulmonary edema and respiratory distress was to be transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley, but the assignment was changed to Marion ambulance after the football standby concluded. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:23 p.m.
10:59 p.m. — A diabetic 80-year-old woman not fully conscious at a home on Lakeshore Dr. at Marion County Lake declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
