Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 11

6:47 a.m. — An uninjured 75-year-old man who fell at a home in the 700 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by Peabody firefighters. Hillsboro ambulance also was called, but the call was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

9:07 a.m. — A 74-year-old man, ill for several days at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. The initial dispatch did not include a location for the call.

11:43 a.m. — A person who fell at a home in the 1100 block of Denver St. in Marion was helped up by Marion firefighters and ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:52 p.m. — A 74-year-old man suffering from heart failure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:54 p.m.

2:10 p.m. — A controlled burn that grew out of control, encompassing 610 acres near 290th and Bluestem Rds., was battled for nearly four hours by firefighters from Lincolnville, Marion, Lost Springs, Herington, and Cedar Point. Tampa ambulance and a county emergency manager stood by to support firefighters.

5:41 p.m. — Peabody firefighters spent 3½ hours monitoring a controlled burn near 80th and Newell Rds.

7:52 p.m. — Marion firefighters secured a leaking valve on an anhydrous ammonia tank at Cooperative Grain and Supply in Marion. A county emergency manager alerted employees and Marion police to check tank valves the next day.

8:43 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Kansas Heart. The ambulance returned to Marion around midnight.

MARCH 12

4:26 p.m. — Peabody firefighters returned to near 80th and Newell Rds. and spent 45 minutes extinguishing fire in a brush pile and hedge row.

4:40 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 5:03 p.m. at Flying Eagle in Florence while sheriff’s deputies searched in vain for a possibly emotionally disturbed person.

8:05 p.m. — A burning utility pole at an Evergy substation at 120th and Timber Rd. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Florence firefighters.

THURSDAY

10:03 a.m. — An unattended death in the 300 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was verified by Hillsboro ambulance attendants.

10:48 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman vomiting blood at a Bethesda Home duplex in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder provided initial evaluation of the patient.

11:24 a.m. — A verbally unresponsive 76-year-old man at a home in the 300 block of W. 10th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

3:27 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell and cut her leg while getting out of a car in the 600 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the woman.

4:21 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters spent four hours checking previous controlled burns in anticipation of fire danger Friday.

5:40 p.m. — A woman having trouble moving her legs at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:49 p.m. — An 81-year-old man who fell at a home near Highland Rd. and Prairie Ln. at Marion County Lake was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the man. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:09 p.m.

FRIDAY

1:53 a.m. — A small fire near a fence line at 120th and Timber Rds. was extinguished within 20 minutes by Florence firefighters.

6:05 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman with chest pains at Salem Home in Hillsboro was transferred to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:15 a.m. — Four people involved in a wreck on US-77 near 140th Rd. were examined by Marion ambulance attendants, but none were taken to a hospital. Florence firefighters and briefly Tampa ambulance also were dispatched.

8:06 a.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell and hurt his head and knee at a farm near 110th and Mustang Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:26 p.m. — A small, unattended fire in a brush pile in an alley in the 300 block of S. Birch St. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters, who asked for police to respond as well.

1:53 p.m. — Peabody firefighters and Marion ambulance were dispatched after a semi-trailer truck rolled onto its side on US-50 near Pawnee Rd. The driver declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:58 p.m. — Marion firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched after another semi rolled onto its side and blocked US-56 at Nighthawk Rd. This driver also declined to be taken to a hospital.

2 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by near Canada in case of additional calls.

2:03 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters and first responders were dispatched to another semi wreck on K-15 north of US-56, later reported to be on US-56 at Goldenrod Rd. Tampa ambulance was redirected to the wreck, but the driver declined to be taken to a hospital.

2:21 p.m. — Burns firefighters extinguished a fire in a utility pole near 20th and Zebulon Rds.

2:30 p.m. — Marion firefighters were dispatched to yet another semi that rolled onto its side, partially blocking K-150 east of Clover Rd. Hillsboro ambulance was redirected to the wreck to examine a driver with shoulder, neck, and head pain, but the call was changed after the ambulance reported unspecified difficulties at 3:10 p.m. Marion ambulance arrived at 3:21 p.m. and at 3:55 p.m. took the driver to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, arriving at 5:08 p.m. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:58 p.m.

2:41 p.m. — Another semi reportedly rolled onto its side on K-150 near Yarrow Rd. A state trooper reportedly handled that wreck.

2:48 p.m. — A grass fire on Diamond Rd. south of US-56 was extinguished within 30 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters. Peabody, Lehigh, and Goessel firefighters and Tampa ambulance initially were dispatched but were told before they arrived that they would not be needed.

4:57 p.m. — Burns firefighters were dispatched to a location that was obscured by other transmissions in newspaper recordings.

10:01 p.m. — A bonfire in a backyard rock ring in the 200 block of N. Pine St. in Peabody was extinguished within 10 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

10:27 p.m. — Peabody firefighters responding to the previous call noticed and extinguished a larger backyard bonfire in the 400 block of Sycamore St.

SATURDAY

6:56 a.m. — At the request of a sheriff’s deputy, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to US-50 and Maple St. in Peabody to evaluate a male patient of unspecified age who may have broken a foot and possibly injured his head. The ambulance took him to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, returning to Hillsboro at 9:11 a.m.

9:56 a.m. — A 74-year-old man who fell the night before at a home in the 300 block of E. 7th St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Peabody firefighters helped lift the man. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:03 p.m.

6:06 p.m. — A 56-year-old woman having chest pains at a farmhouse near 80th and Wagon Wheel Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

SUNDAY

2:25 a.m. — An 86-year-old man with chest and abdominal pain at a home in the 200 block of N. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:12 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched to a controlled grass fire that grew out of control near US-56 and the Marion / McPherson County line, but Canton firefighters canceled the call before Hillsboro firefighters arrived.

5:01 p.m. — An 88-year-old man with respiratory failure was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:01 p.m.

8:05 p.m. — Noticing rekindling of a previously reported fire, Hillsboro firefighters spent an hour and a quarter at US-56 and the county line putting out burning brush.

9:02 p.m. — A brush pile burning along Sunrise Rd. north of US-56 was extinguished within 30 minutes by Marion firefighters, who said they would check back in the morning.

MONDAY

8:45 p.m. — A small backyard fire in the 800 block of Olive St. in Peabody was extinguished within 10 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

9:03 p.m. — Returning from their previous call, Peabody firefighters spent five minutes putting out a small grass fire near 59th and Needle Rds.

9:17 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transferred an unspecified patient on an emergency basis from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:27 a.m.
