ENDZONE: GHS cross country

Staff writer

Brittny Czarnowsky ran as the only person on the Bluebird girls’ team for much of last season and capped the 2010 year with a 24th place individual finish at the State Cross Country Meet at Wamego.

“It will take me several meets to get back to last year’s pace, but the goal is always to be better than the year before,” said the smiling senior Czarnowsky.

Brittny’s brother Nathan Czarnowsky, Stephan Goertzen, Heath Goertzen, Grant Flaming, and Ben Wiens return as letter-winners for the boys from last season. Senior Stephan Goertzen hopes for a better season this year than last with most of the credit going to harder work during this past summer.

“I feel like I might already be in the shape that I was near the end of last season,” commented Goertzen.

Results from the first meet will be a gauge for this year’s team.

Coach Derrick Birdsell hopes that freshmen will enjoy the team and contribute to the success of the 2011 season. There are a total of ten boys on the Goessel team with Brittny being the only girl so far.
