Every Trojan wins 2 matches
The Hillsboro High School tennis team competed April 26 in the Hesston tournament.
No. 1 singles player Grant Shewey defeated Ryan Horton of McPherson, 8-7. Shewey won his first match with a 7-2 tie-breaker victory. He then lost to Quinn Dippel of Smoky Valley, 8-1, and Keegan LeFevre of Hesston, 8-4. He defeated Daniel Allmon of McPherson, 8-5, to place seventh.
No. 2 singles player Jarod Hamm lost to Alex Reyes of Hutchinson Trinity, 8-4. He won his final three matches: 8-0 over Dillon Boway of Republic County, 8-3 over Austin McCormick of Maize South, and 8-6 over Garrett Prilliman of Conway Springs. Hamm placed 17th overall.
Hillsboro’s No. 1 doubles team of Harry Faber and Daniel Gray defeated a team from Wichita Trinity, 8-5, in its first match. They lost to Maize South, 8-2, and Smoky Valley, 8-3. They defeated Claflin, 8-3, before losing to Hesston, 8-3, to finish 14th.
The No. 2 doubles team of Tyler Funk and Jeff Pritchard lost its first match to Wichita Trinity, 8-5. Funk and Pritchard then defeated Claflin, 8-2, and Republic County, 8-6. They fell to another team from Wichita Trinity, 8-0, to finish 18th in the tournament.
“It was a great opportunity to play against the best competition we’ve seen so far this year,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “The guys competed well with everyone winning at least two matches.”
