Ewert named state history teacher of year

Marion High School history teacher Gary Ewert was surprised that the Kansas Council for History Education had honored him as the 2022-23 History Education High School Teacher of the Year.
When nominations went out seeking teachers with a passion for history, principal Donald Raymer didn’t have to think twice about nominating Ewert.
In the nomination, Raymer wrote that Ewert brought history into the present. He works daily to engage students through different learning activities to put history at their fingertips.
He brings historic artifacts into his classroom for students to see, touch, and review as if they were curators for a museum.
His passion for history, especially for American history, travels well beyond the classroom. He has a deep appreciation for history and a genuine passion for sharing that with others, Raymer said.
Ewert plans to retire at the end of the school year.
