Daytime traffic on US-56 from the county line west to McPherson may be delayed an estimated 15 minutes now through July 29.
Crews will be installing a new rock edge and creating new pavement markings on 13 miles of the highway.
During the day, traffic will be reduced to a single 11-foot lane controlled by flaggers and a pilot car.
Work was to have begun Monday and is scheduled to be completed July 29, weather permitting.
