In a match played Sept. 16 at Hesston, Hillsboro High School’s Becky Faber bounced back from an early loss, to claim the number one singles fifth-place consolation championship.
Faber avenged an 8-1 loss to Sterling’s Janel Prather by winning her other three matches on the day.
She defeated Danica Good of Hesston twice, 8-2 and 8-1, and Chelsea Ellis of Sacred Heart, 8-3.
“Becky is really starting to come into her own as a single player,” HHS head coach Bob Woelk said.
Kelsey Bartel went 1-2 on the day as Hillsboro’s number two singles player.
Her victory was an 8-0 shutout of Haven’s Ruby Miller.
The Hillsboro number one doubles team of Emma Heyen and Aubrey Meier, and number two doubles Hayley Pankratz and Elise Heyen, each lost all three of their matches.
“Overall, I think we made a good showing, despite the collective records,” Woelk said. “Many of our games are close. We just need to learn how to win key points.”
The Trojans played Tuesday at Wichita Collegiate, and will play host at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to a tournament.
