Florence Labor Day celebration dodges thunderstorms

Staff writer

The storm early Monday morning caused a few delays but didn’t stop Labor Day festivities in Florence.

The parade featured seven floats. Winners were: first, Marion-Florence Cub Scouts; second, Florence Historical Society; and third, Harold and Shirley Grinstead family. The award for the best classic car or truck went to Richard and Kathy Dirks, Hillsboro. Winner of the annual button drawing was Sandy Harper.

The annual 1860’s vintage baseball game drew a crowd Sunday evening. The Howe House Griffins defeated the Harvey Boys 9-7. A 20-minute fireworks display followed the game at dusk and finished just before the storm hit.
