Follow-up to state berth cut short

Hillsboro golf had a tall order headed into 2020, trying to follow up last year’s second place finish at Marion golf regional, and state berth that followed, despite losing individual regional champion Avery Unruh to graduation.

That became a moot point when spring sports were canceled, but a large part of the team’s plan plan likely would have rested with a pack of reliable golfers, rather than one dominant leader.

Of the four golfers who competed alongside Unruh at last year’s regional, none scored below 120.

Despite having to scrap this season, prospects remain promising for next year since no golfers will be graduating in May.

Another positive is that this group knows a thing or two about subverting expectations.

The team entered 2019 with expectations of a rebuilding year, with each entering last season as underclassmen with no prior varsity experience.

Hillsboro’s returning golfers lived between 115 and 130 all season.

Paul Glanzer had the best single performance among returners last year, scoring 89 during the Hillsboro leg of 2019’s Marion County 36-Hole Invitational.

Eli Dalke, Rylie Daniels, Frank Wichert, Zach Dittert, and Glanzer turned in 10 finishes at or below 130 last year, with each hitting the mark at least once.
