Fond ‘Memories’
To the editor:
In the Nov. 26 issue, an editorial mentioned the “Memories” column.
I know that Joan Meyer, my aunt, absolutely loved creating that part of the paper each week. When she was sorting through things, looking for tidbits to publish, she occasionally would send me copies of articles that Uncle Bill had written about the “Little Princesses” and our visits to Marion.
I have been reading the Record since I was a child. Marion was and will always be a huge part of my life and my heart.
Summers there were priceless, including the one when my cousin, Eric, taught me how to light firecrackers — much to my mother’s chagrin.
The “Memories” column always has been my favorite part of the paper. The entries bring to mind when we’d get new shoes from Schoneman’s, go shopping at Beaston’s, buy candy at Duckwalls, and eat breakfast at the Owl Car.
When I see these names and those of people like Lucille Brittan, kids I played with, Mrs. Riggs at the library, and so many others, I can’t help but smile. Every visit to Marion was eagerly anticipated, and the “Memories” are more treasured than you know.
In spite of the tragedy that fateful day in August, 2023, I am so terribly proud of what the newspaper has accomplished, and I know that Joan, Bill, and Ruth Meyer would be as well.
People all over the world are now reading about this tiny town in the middle of Kansas and supporting your efforts for justice.
Keep doing what you’re doing, and keep reminding everyone what a wonderful place Marion has been and can be.
