Football off to a winning start

Marion, Hillsboro, Peabody, and Goessel all win at home on Friday night

Staff writer

Marion County football is off to a winning start.

Four of its five teams won games at home Friday night.

Marion triumphed over Douglass, 26-18, Hillsboro cut down Hesston in a 25-14 battle, Peabody bested Central Christian, 52-28, and Goessel defeated Herington in a 48-0 rout.

Centre, which did not play as it awaits a new six-man schedule was the only county team that didn’t grab a victory.

Marion

Marion launched a 14-point rally in the second half to win over Douglass. The victory put the Warriors 2-0 for the season.

“I thought the guys did a good job of responding in the second half after we allowed Douglas back into the game,” coach Shaun Craft said. “We have to learn, as a young team, how to put opponents away when we have the chance.”

Sophomores Jack Lanning, Trevor Schafers and Jonathan Frese stepped up for the team’s offense Friday rushing 88, 50, and 128 yards respectively.

Lanning and Frese both scored touchdowns for Marion. Schafers scored twice — once on a 72-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“A turning point in the second half was a big special team’s mistake by Douglass that we took advantage of,” Craft said. “It gave us a short field that we capitalized on by putting points on the board.”

Marion upperclassmen were heavy hitters for the Warrior’s defense, which allowed Douglass only 134 total yards.

Junior Quade Williams took on double blocking by the Bulldogs and senior Ayden Brammer made four tackles that resulted in loss.

Marion will host Kingman at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hillsboro

Pass interceptions by Hillsboro seniors Tristan Rathbone and Frank Wichert helped the Trojans grab a 25-14 victory over the Swathers.

Rathbone snatched the first midway through the first quarter, setting up a touchdown drive.

Wichert grabbed the second and scored on a 96-yard return — a play that had his teammates screaming on the sidelines.

Coach Demetrius Cox praised the big plays but also credited the victory to Hillsboro’s teamwork.

“We have the ability and skill-set to play at a very high level against anyone when we do the small things and have faith that the guy next to us will get the job done,” he said.

Hillsboro seniors Eli Dalke, Jamari Harris, Filow Cruz, Corbin Marple and juniors Abrey Nichols and Lane Rodgers also were top performers Friday night, Cox said.

“The offensive line did a wonderful job, allowing us to keep a balanced passing and running game against a very good Hesston defense,” he said.

High humidity and temperatures in the 90s spurred coaches of both teams to ask for regular water breaks.

“Our biggest challenge was guys having cramps,” Cox said. “Our younger guys did an amazing job stepping up to the plate when their number was called.”

Hillsboro, now 2-0 for the season, will face Smoky Valley Friday in Lindsborg.

Peabody-Burns

After some early-season bumps, Peabody-Burns is coming together as a team, and coach Kody Tegtmeier is proud of his Warrior’s efforts

The Warriors won 52-28 Friday over Central Christian at home, recovering from a 62-6 drubbing Sept. 3 by Little River.

“Some inexperienced boys who haven’t played football in two years or more stepped up and played quite well.  We need to continue to work harder to improve each week,” Tegtmeier said.

Seniors Philip Young led the team in passing Friday with 78 yards and Noal Reynolds led in rushing with 249 yards and two touchdowns.

Seniors Young, Reynolds, and Thomas Smith and junior Kael Hutchison all scored touchdowns for the Warriors.

“We had three players with more than 100 yards rushing for the night, and four scored touchdowns for us,” Tegtmeier said. “We had a lot of guys step up.”

The Warrior, offense did a better job blocking and creating holes for the team’s runners, he said.

Peabody-Burns turned the ball over twice, fumbling on the Warrior’s first play.

Central Christian tied the game with their first play of the second half, climbing back from a14-0 lead by Peabody.

“I think that kind of woke us up a bit,” Tegtmeier said. “After that point, our defense stepped up and played very well, and we scored 32 straight points.”

Peabody-Burns will face Stafford Friday on the road.

Goessel

Goessel High beat Herrington Friday, building a 6-0 first quarter lead into a 46-0 rout.

Jake Flaming ran in Goessel’s first touchdown quarter from seven yards.

Skyler Wuest caught quarterback Grant Bryant’s pass for a gain of 41 yards and ran 30 more for a touchdown.

Kacen Smith scored next for the Bluebirds with a 17-yard run and a two-point conversion.

Smith put another touchdown on the scoreboard for the Bluebirds and ran in a second two-point conversion minutes before the first half ended.

With time running, Herington tried to gain yards through the air.

Goessel’s Jake Wiens, hampered with a thickly wrapped right wrist, took advantage by grabbing an interception to run in a 26-yard touchdown.

Grant Bryant threw a 35-yard pass to Caiden Duerksen to score a final touchdown for Goessel, handing Herrington a loss on the 45-point mercy rule.

Goessel, now 1-1 for the season, will host Little River at 7 p.m. Friday.
