Four Trojan runners make all-league

Four Hillsboro cross-country runners earned all-league honors by medaling in the top 15 places at the Central Kansas League meet Thursday at Halstead.

Emily Sechrist was the highest Hillsboro finisher, placing third in the girls race with a time of 15 minutes, 51.19 seconds.

“Emily continues to run great and was third behind two other outstanding runners,” coach Stuart Holmes said.

Josh Richert was the highest male finisher for the Trojans, placing seventh with a time of 18:06.62.

Bret Mueller medaled at the league meet for the second consecutive year, finishing 13th, 18:33.37.

Dylan Hill placed 15th, 18:36.90.

“Dylan medaling as a freshman is quite an achievement,” Holmes said. “Especially in the boys race which is normally dominated by upper-classmen, even more so than the girls race.”

Samantha Ens finished 28th, 19:36.89 and Erin Wiebe finished one spot lower with a time of 20:13.58.

“Karyn Leihy and Amy Bartel had injuries that kept them from competing, but hopefully they can run next week at regionals,” Holmes said.

Jordan Bezdek finished 28th with a time of 19:39.67 just ahead of Avery Franz, 31st, 19:55.97, and J.D. Schmidt, 32nd, 19:56.31. Daniel Gray placed 43rd, 20:42.46.

“One of the highlights of the meet was the continued improvement and competitiveness of our guys team,” Holmes said. “We have a number of young guys on varsity this year but they have improved so much, that along with solid front running of Josh and Bret, the guys have a legitimate chance of qualifying for state as a team.”
