Gearing up for exciting season

Staff writer

As always, 2011 will be a year with tough competition for the Hillsboro Trojan boys’ tennis team

“Certainly here in central Kansas, we get the opportunity to compete against some of the best 3A and 4A tennis players in the state,” coach Stuart Holmes said.

The Trojans have several players returning from the 2010 squad.

“Providing a solid nucleus to this year’s team are three returning lettermen: senior Jarod Hamm, junior Grant Shewey, and sophomore Harry Faber,” Holmes said.

Shewey qualified for the state tournament in singles in 2010.

Sophomores Daniel Gray, Tyler Funk, and Jeff Pritchard also return to the Trojans’ squad. They are joined by newcomers Diego Castillo and Nodari Lomidze — both foreign exchange students.

“The season is off to a good start, but with just a few practices it is too early to tell who will earn which varsity spots and, of course, that can change throughout the year,” Holmes said.

“Every day we will be looking to improve in practice and make progress throughout the season,” he added. “Tennis provides a great opportunity to challenge yourself mentally as well as physically, and we want to grow in both areas each day, whether at practice or in competition.”

Because of Hillsboro’s quality tennis facilities, the Trojans will host the 3-2-1A State Tennis Championship May 13 and 14.
