Running all season as the only cross-country runner for the girls’ team at Goessel High School, Brittny Czarnowsky qualified to run at the State meet in Wamego on Saturday. She finished the 4-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 25.41 seconds and was 32nd out of 77 runners. Although the course was dry, the stiff south wind made its presence felt for the 11 a.m. race.
Czarnowsky has been running all four years in high school. As a freshman, she competed at the state meet with the Berean team finishing as the team leader and earning a 46th place in the 2A race. Last year as a junior at Goessel she was the only team member to qualify for the state meet and finished 24th, breaking the 18 minute barrier on the tough course at Wamego.
This year, she began the season knowing that she would be the only girl interested in running cross-country. She decided to do her best and see how far that might take her for this season. The top 10 individuals at the regional meet were assured of running at the state meet. Czarnowsky came in fifth in the regional race despite missing two meets due to injury this season.
