Staff writer

Goessel High School students Kara Schmucker, Nicki Bartel, and Alex Hiebert competed at the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America National Conference July 8 to 12 in Orlando, Fla., and brought home some top honors for their efforts.

Schmucker earned a silver medal in the teach and train division, and Bartel earned a silver medal in career investigation. Hiebert won a gold medal in recycle and redesign.

Sponsor Gina Bergin and classmate Tia Goertzen, who served as a student judge for a star event at the conference, joined the Goessel competitors.

“We heard several different speakers that were very interesting,” Kara Schmucker said. “There was one, Grant Baldwin, who was really funny but also very motivational.”

The group enjoyed sightseeing and touring several points of interest during their stay in Florida.

“We got to spend several hours at Disney World on Saturday, and then went to Wet-N-Wild on Sunday,” Schmucker said. “We just had a great time, lots of laughter and inside jokes that we’ll never forget.”
