Staff writer

Goessel High School scholars’ bowl team won regionals Thursday at Stafford. The win earned them a place at the state championship tournament Saturday at Quinter.

GHS had a 4-1 record in pool play. Their wins came against Little River, 60-20; St. John, 80-10; Macksville, 80-20; and Burton, 60-40. Their lone loss was 50-40 in a tiebreaker against Stafford.

In the round-robin title round, GHS went 4-1, with wins against Pretty Prairie, 50-20; Quivira Heights, 70-0; Central Christian, 60-40; and a 15-0 win against Stafford that came down to the final question. They lost to Macksville, 40-30.

By earning first place at regionals, Goessel qualified for the state tournament for the seventh consecutive year, said Coach Wes Schmidt-Tieszen.

The team members at the tournament were Anthony Esau, Lindsey Wedel, Laird Goertzen, Adam Meysing, and Alex Schmidt.

“We’ve done well,” Schmidt-Tieszen said. “We go to a lot of tournaments against big schools, and I think in the long run that really helps us.”

In previous competition, the varsity team placed second at the Heart of America league meet, and the junior varsity placed third.
