Girls outnumber boys on golf team

Staff writer

A promising group of underclassmen is out for golf this year at Centre High School. Except for one senior, the team is comprised of freshmen and sophomores. Seven are girls and five are boys.

Senior Karl Riffel and sophomores Nathaniel Engler, Jacob Matz, and Tyler Bentz are returning from last year. Riffel and Engler are letterwinners.

New members of the team are sophomores Kristin Vinduska and Ally Basore and freshmen Katie Marler, Karoline Chizek, Rebecca Reneau, Hannah Peterson, and Raeanne Bryant.

Centre golfers have been to the state tournament at least seven times during Greg Wyatt’s 13-year tenure as coach. He hopes for a return trip this year.

He said he doesn’t know how well the individual team members will perform. He said one thing in their favor is that Centre will host the regional tournament at its practice field at Herington Country Club.

“I’m hoping that playing on their home turf will make them comfortable enough to do well,” he said. “The success of the season will depend on how hard they work at it.”
