Gladiola Backhus

Gladiola Backhus, 94, died Saturday at Twin Oaks Assisted Living in Lansing.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek.

She was born Jan. 15, 1920 to J. John and Bertha (Gentz) Kuhn at Hope, and attended St. John’s Parochial School and Hope High School.

She married Emil A. Backhus of rural Tampa on April 7, 1940. She was a homemaker and worked with her husband on the farm. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek, Herington, and was active in LWML. She was a lifelong resident of the Hope and Herington area.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include a sister, Elaine Backhus of Leavenworth, and numerous nieces and nephews.
