5 GHS athletes qualify for state track

Goessel High School’s Tia Goertzen will participate in three events Friday at the state track and field meet in Wichita. She earned second place in the 100-meter hurdles at regionals May 16 in a battle at the finish line. She placed third in the 300 hurdles and will join the 4x400-relay team that placed fourth at the regional track meet.
The top four finishers in each event have earned positions at the state meet.
Jessica Harvey, Ali Buller, and Jennifer Van Horn will also be part of the relay team.
Other girls for Goessel who scored points were Brittny Czarnowsky, fifth, 3200. Van Horn picked up a point in the 400 with sixth place.
Goertzen finished fifth in the triple jump to add to the points for the Bluebird team. Goessel finished seventh as a team out of 19 schools.
Preliminary races in all of these events will take place on Friday morning. The top eight of 16 entries in each event will advance to the finals on Saturday.
Laird Goertzen and John Berkholz will also travel to Wichita to compete in the state meet.
Berkholz, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury, came from behind and finished fourth at the Burlington regional as the fifth-place runner faded in the straight-away.
Laird Goertzen ran a tactical race in the 3200, finishing first by three seconds. In the 1600, the top four runners came to the finish line in a group with Goertzen earning third.
The Goessel boys finished 10th out of 22 schools.
Finals in the 3200 will be Friday morning and the 1600 will be Saturday. Berkholz will run preliminaries Friday morning with the top eight runners making finals on Saturday.
