Goessel battles Little River, falls 64-30

Staff writer

Goessel battled Little River toe-to-toe Friday for half of its first district game, but faded in the second half to be difficult as the Redskins won 64-30.

Josh Schmidt ran 1 yard for the first score after a long run by Miguel Guerrero, but Little River answered and led 8-6 after one quarter.

Schmidt zig-zagged his way for a 58-yard score to put the Bluebirds ahead 14-8, but two rushing touchdowns put Little River ahead 20-14. Schmidt eluded tacklers again on a 44-yard run to tie the game at 20.

After another Redskins score, Schmidt connected with Jordan Griffin for a 28-yard pass to tie the game at halftime 28-28.

In the second half, Little River’s grinding offense took its toll on the Bluebirds.

Little River scored on its first possession, but the Bluebirds picked up 2 points when Little River receivers were covered and Schmidt tackled the quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Goessel trailed 36-30, but would not score again as Little River coasted from there to a 64-30 win.

Goessel’s defense was led by Schmidt with 9 tackles, Dylan Lindeman 8.5, Kenny Hammond 8, and Trevor Beisel 6.

The Bluebirds are 3-2 and 0-1 in district play. Goessel will be at home Friday against Ellinwood.
