Bluebirds lose to Warriors
Staff writer
In the final football game of the season for the Bluebirds Friday night, Goessel needed to adjust to injuries on the line in order to prevail against Peabody-Burns. The Warriors needed a win to stay eligible for playoffs in postdistrict games.
Storm Pickens opened the scoring for Peabody with a 40-yard run. After a Goessel touchdown was called back because of penalty, Peabody-Burns intercepted a Neal Brubaker pass. Alex Ross had a key tackle, to force the Warriors to punt.
Deep in their own territory, the Bluebirds lost a fumble. PBHS scored twice, on the ensuing short drive and on a punt return. The Warriors led at the end of the first quarter, 22-0.
A long pass from Neal Brubaker to Nic Buller was the offensive highlight of the evening for the Bluebirds. With Goessel down on the 2-yard line, John Berkholz was able to cross the goal line only to have the touchdown called back because of a penalty. On the next play, Jake Smucker caught a Neal Brubaker pass for a touchdown, making the score 22-6.
The Warriors scampered for another long touchdown run, intercepted a Bluebird pass, scored again, and recovered a Bluebird fumble, which led to another score.
The Bluebird line had trouble all night trying to figure out the PBHS pass rush. The Warriors scored again to make the final score, 54-6.
The game ended at halftime because of the points rule in eight-man play.
