Staff writer

At the Peabody-Burns gymnasium Tuesday, Goessel went down in defeat at the hands of Peabody-Burns 47-44.

The Bluebirds trailed 26-15 at halftime and then put together a surge of points in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 34-27.

One minute into the fourth quarter, the Bluebirds trailed by just 2 points. Goessel converted just 5 of 26 free throws as it let the league game slip away.

Senior Lawton Makovec led all scorers with 16 points.

The Bluebirds are now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Wheat State League.

Goessel will be at Pretty Prairie on Friday and at Centre next Tuesday.  Their next home game will be on Jan. 16 against Wakefield.

Girls take care of business

Goessel traveled to Peabody on Tuesday for a Wheat State League game.

The Bluebirds started sluggish, allowing the Warriors to take a 7-4 lead.  However, Goessel then scored 20 consecutive points and led at halftime 31-13.  Goessel’s defense corralled the Warriors and forced multiple turnovers, resulting in a final score of 58-32.

Aleena Cook led the Bluebirds with 17 points, many of them coming from layups.

Goessel is now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Wheat State League games.

The Bluebirds will be at Pretty Prairie (non-league) on Friday, then face a highly ranked Centre squad Tuesday at Lost Springs before coming home on Jan. 16 to face Wakefield.
