Goessel boys lose in first round

Contributing writer

The Goessel boys’ team had a cold performance Feb. 27 at Burrton.

Burrton began with the first seven points, but buckets from Ben Wiens, Trey Schmidt, Davis Cook and Nic Buller got Goessel back into the game trailing 11-10. The Chargers scored five more to end the first quarter with the Bluebirds looking at a 16-10 deficit.

The Bluebirds mustered only five points in the second period as Schmidt and Cook combined, but they still only trailed by 10, 25-15.

Although Goessel scored 14 points in the third period, the Chargers had an answer for every basket. The Bluebirds trailed, 41-29, after three periods.

Schmidt hit a 3-pointer to begin the fourth quarter, Wiens hit a bucket, and Cook hit two free-throws, along with a number of buckets from close range to get Goessel as close as 53-46. Burrton sealed the win with four free throws. Goessel’s season ended with a 57-48 loss.

Cook ended the night with 14 points, and Schmidt and Ben Wiens each earned 11. Buller ended with eight points and Shane Goerzen finished with four.

Every coach hopes for seniors to be leaders, and this year the five seniors — Cook, Schmidt, Buller, Goerzen, and Dan Smucker — contributed 78 percent of the Bluebird point production.

Goessel finished the season with a 9-12 record.
