The Goessel boys played once last week in a Friday home game against Moundridge.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first. Zach Showalter hit a 3-pointer for the Bluebirds followed by a Brian Hiebert finish underneath the bucket. Lawton Makovec layed in a stolen pass and the Bluebirds trailed 10-7. Moundridge finished the first quarter with eight consecutive points to lead 18-7 at the break.
Showalter knocked in another three, and Hiebert dropped in a soft eight-footer. After a Makovec bucket and a Zach Wiens free throw, the Bluebirds showed some momentum. But the Wildcat defense stepped up with the score 22-16 and three minutes to play in the first half. Moundridge finished the quarter on an 8-1 run and took a 30-17 lead at halftime.
Goessel’s leading scorer for the season, Ben Wiens, spent much of the night on the bench with foul trouble and the Wildcats opened a 20-point lead to begin the third period.
Kellen Froese hit one free throw and Showalter scored two points as Moundridge took a 38-20 lead at the end of three periods. Makovec and Froese added to the scoring in the final period, but the Wildcats left Goessel with a decisive 53-30 victory. The Bluebirds are 6-6 overall. They play next at Centre on Friday.
