A very athletic group represents the Solomon boys’ basketball team this year, and it showed in a 57-40 defeat of Goessel.
Goessel fell behind 10-2 as the Gorillas capitalized on baskets after turnovers. However, Goessel tied the game at 11 with points from Zach Showalter, Ben Wiens, Reece Hiebert, and Lawton Makovec. Goessel trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Gorillas increased their lead to 30-20 at halftime.
The Bluebirds matched Solomon in scoring in the third period with points from Zach Wiens and Showalter. Ben Wiens and Makovec hit key baskets, but the Gorillas still led 42-32 at the end of the third quarter.
Again, the Bluebirds’ scoring stalled in the fourth quarter. Even with a couple of baskets by Ben Wiens and a 3-pointer from Showalter, the Bluebirds trailed by 12 points. Kellen Froese made a 3-pointer but the Gorillas continue to add points of their own and the game ended with a Goessel 57-40 loss.
Goessel was 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play before playing Argonia on Tuesday. The Bluebirds play Elyria Christian on Friday at home.
