Goessel boys nab first win

Girls’ winning streak continues to grow

Staff writer

The Goessel boys lost Friday to powerhouse Elyria Christian, but it didn’t take the shine off the team’s first win earlier in the week.

Although Goessel held an early lead against Elyria, the height of the visitors took its toll on the Bluebirds. Elyria led 9-5 at the end of one quarter, and jumped out to a 29-13 lead at halftime. Goessel’s 18 turnovers allowed the visitors to extend their lead to 45-17 at the end of three quarters. The lopsided game ended with a Bluebird loss, 53-29.

Jordan Griffin was the only player in double-figures with 15 points.

The results were brighter Jan. 9 when the Bluebirds picked up their first win against Canton-Galva.

Goessel exploded to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter, dominated the third, 16-2, and breezed to a 47-28 victory.

Dylan Lindeman led the Bluebirds with 18 points and Griffin tacked on 17.

The boys will be in action again tonight at Burrton.

Girls

The Goessel girls ran their winning streak to eight last week with wins over Canton-Galva, 52-22, and Elyria, 45-28.

On Friday, at Goessel’s senior night, the Elyria Eagles were content to slow the game. The Bluebirds held the Eagles to just 2 points in the first quarter, and Goessel fluttered to a 22-11 lead at halftime. Neither team could establish a run in the third quarter as Goessel’s lead grew to 32-20. The Bluebirds capitalized on Eagle miscues as Goessel won its fifth Wheat State League game without a loss, 45-28.

Seniors Eden Hiebert scored 10, Britney Hiebert 9, Kara Burkholder 6, with Stephany Meyer and Abby Hannon each adding 7.

Eden Hiebert led the way with 16 points in a 52-22 blowout Jan. 9 over Canton-Galva.

The girls will play Friday at home against Moundridge.
