Goessel boys out-muscled by Solomon

Contributing writer

In a Wheat State League game on Friday at Goessel High School, the Bluebirds were outscored in every quarter in the boys’ game against Solomon.

The Gorillas presented a formidable obstacle with five players 6-foot-2 and taller rotating onto the floor. The Bluebirds jumped out to a 10-7 lead, but the visitors finished the quarter on an 11-1 run. Goessel would never gain a foothold, as the deficit grew to 36-13 in the second quarter. Ben Wiens and Nic Buller sparked a rally before halftime to get as close as 40-21 at the break.

Davis Cook got into the scoring column in the third period and Trey Schmidt, Buller, and Brian Hiebert added points, but the Bluebirds trailed by 24 at the end of three periods. Reece Hiebert and Nathan Czarnowsky added points in the fourth quarter as the Bluebirds lost their first game of 2013 by a final score of 75-42.

Scoring for the Bluebirds in the game were: Buller with 13, Schmidt with 8, Cook with 7, Wiens 5, Shane Goerzen 3, R. Hiebert 3, B. Hiebert 2, and Czarnowsky with 1 point.

The Goessel boys are now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Wheat State League. Goessel played on Tuesday at Argonia and Elyria on Friday.
