Goessel boys pick up first win of season

The Goessel boys’ basketball team defeated Elyria Christian 48-36 in the Bluebird Classic tournament Saturday in Goessel.
Goessel jumped out to a 14-7 lead midway through the first period. Elyria Christian trimmed the deficit to 16-12 by the quarter break.
The Bluebirds defense held the Eagles to three points in the second period, while the offense continued to roll. Lucas Hiebert got a lay-up, Lawton Makovec hit a three, and Rhett Makovec nailed two 3-pointers. Zach Wiens worked inside for a field goal and two free throws to give Goessel a 30-15 lead at halftime.
The teams matched each other bucket-for-bucket in the third period. Wiens hit two free throws, Rhett Makovec drained another 3-pointer, and Lawton Makovec scored a field goal and two free throws.
Goessel went into the fourth quarter leading 39-25. The Eagles cut the deficit to nine points, but a 3-pointer by Kellen Froese put the Bluebirds up by 12 to finish the game 48-36.
Lawton Makovec scored 16 points, Rhett Makovec, 11, Wiens, 10, and Froese, 5.
Central Christian
Goessel played Central Christian on Tuesday. The Bluebirds trailed by nine points at halftime and 12 points at the end of the third quarter. The Cougars hit six threes to blow the game open in the fourth quarter, handing Goessel a 67-50 loss in the first game of the Bluebird Classic.
Lawton Makovec led Goessel scorers with 17 points. Davis scored 12, Wiens 8, Froese 6, Hiebert 4, and Jordan Griffin 3.
Burrton
Friday against Burrton, the Bluebirds fell behind 20-9 in the first quarter. Six Burrton players scored in the second, while the Bluebirds only connected on two field goals. Goessel trailed 41-16 at halftime.
The Chargers doubled the score on Goessel at the end of three quarters, 56-28. Goessel managed 14 points in the fourth quarter, but lost 65-42.
Lawton Makovec led Goessel scorers with 15, followed by Wiens with 13, and Rhett Makovec scored five.
Goessel takes a 1-3 record into the first Wheat State League game at Hope on Friday.
