Goessel boys place 6th at Burrton, girls suffer first loss of season

Goessel boys finished in sixth place in the Burrton Tournament with three close games.

Goessel trailed by 11 points at the end of the first quarter Thursday in a game with Central Christian. By half time Goessel was behind by one point and it was a close battle to the end of the game with the Bluebirds winning 53-52.

Wiens dropped in 17 points with Schmidt knocking down 12.

Saturday, Goessel played Burrton.

the lead changed hands ten times. Goessel led at half-time 22-21 and opened the third quarter on 6-point run. The Bluebirds led 30-28 at the end of three quarters, but from there Burrton hung on to win 42-40. Wiens led the team with 17 points.

In the opening round, the Bluebirds lost in overtime to Little River 47-45. Zach Wiens scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds.

Wiens was selected to the all-tournament team for the second year in a row.

The Goessel girls dropped their first game of the season, losing 42-37 to Moundridge on Friday.

Moundridge came out with quick ball movement and accurate shooting to jump out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Moundridge dropped in five points to start the third quarter and celebrated a 35-14 lead.

Goessel rallied, as Olivia Duerksen caught a deflected pass and put it in for a basket, Page Hiebert scored three points, and Eden Hiebert swished a 3-pointer, as the Bluebirds cut the 21-point deficit to 7 points. 40-36. However, Moundridge held on for the 42-37 win.

Page Hiebert ended with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Goessel is now 9-1 for the season. They played in the opening round of the Berean Tournament on Tuesday, with additional games Thursday and Saturday.
