Staff writer

Goessel held off a threat from Elyria Christian on Friday and coasted to a 49-33 win.

Elyria Christian didn’t get any shots to drop in the first quarter as the Bluebirds built a big lead. Lawton Makovec fought for the tip and scored a layup to start the game. Seniors Connor Davis and Lucas Hiebert combined for 6 points. Zach Wiens scored 4 points under the basket as the Bluebirds led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.

After a Makovec 3-pointer the Bluebirds held a 17-3 lead. The Eagles rallied, outscoring the Bluebirds 13-2. Jordan Griffin hit a basket in the lane, and Chase Flaming made a free throw, as the teams went into the locker room with Goessel leading 20-16.

Wiens became the go-to scorer in the third quarter, with 8 points, and Rhett Makovec hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter to give Goessel a 35-22 lead. Elyria managed to get as close as 10 points, but Goessel finished strong, winning 49-33.

Wiens led the team with 20 points, Davis scored 10, and Lawton Makovec hit 7.

Tuesday results

Zach Wiens poured in 30 points and Lawton Makovec nailed 23 points in Goessel’s 59-57 victory over Peabody on Tuesday. Although the lead changed hands several times in the first half, Goessel led at the end of each quarter 19-16, 32-27, 48-40 and a final 59-57.

Although the Bluebirds led by 8 with less than two minutes to play, going only 1-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter allowed Peabody to keep the game close.

The Warriors hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to play to get within 2 points. Goessel missed a free-throw, and Peabody shot another 3-pointer that bounced off the rim at the final buzzer.
