Goessel disarms Peabody-Burns

Staff writer

Goessel ran roughshod over Peabody-Burns on Friday, scoring seven touchdowns in 48-0 tune-up for district play.

Goessel got on track in the middle of the first quarter with its first touchdown, and the Bluebirds led at the end of one quarter 6-0.

The Bluebirds defense stopped the Warriors three times from converting fourth downs, helping the offense with field position. Kenny Hammond recovered a Peabody-Burns fumble leading to a 26-yard pass from Josh Schmidt to Jordan Griffin for the Bluebirds second score.

A Warriors punt pushed the Bluebirds back to their own 1-yard line, but another Schmidt to Griffin pass resulted in a 62-yard touchdown.

Hammond picked up his second fumble recovery of the night and again the Bluebirds marched down the field, with Zach Zogleman running 21 yards for another score. Goessel’s lead at halftime was 28-0.

The Bluebirds opened the third quarter with Josh Schmidt sprinting downfield 54 yards for his second touchdown. The Bluebirds recovered an on-side kick and Trevor Beisel ran for 12 yards for another score.

After the Bluebird defense again held on fourth down, Zogleman raced 40 yards for a score, ending the game 48-0 with 5:15 left in the third period.

Goessel converted 6-of-7 third down attempts. In this shortened game, the Bluebirds put together 408 yards of offense and never punted.

Schmidt completed passes to Jayce Schmidt and Griffin for 105 yards. Miguel Guerrero and Beisel each had 3 tackles for losses. Carson Sterk, Griffin, and Hammond stopped the Warriors with each of them getting 3.50 tackles.

Goessel begins district play on Friday at Little River.
