Several state publications have selected all-state football teams and three Goessel High School athletes were recognized.

The Topeka Capitol-Journal named Craig Banman an all-state kick returner, Austin Unruh an honorable mention offensive back, and Weston Hiebert an honorable mention defensive back.

The Wichita Eagle named Banman an all-state defensive back and an honorable mention offensive end.

Unruh was listed on the honorable mention team as a quarterback and Hiebert an honorable mention linebacker.

This recognition is in the eight-man Division across the state of Kansas.

Banman led the team scoring 34 touchdowns with several of those coming from kick and punt returns.

He also averaged 43.3 yards receiving per game, and 10.4 yards per carry rushing.

Unruh completed 61.8 percent of his passes while averaging 115.3 yards per game passing and connecting for 21 touchdowns.

Hiebert played in the defensive backfield averaging 8.8 tackles per game with two interceptions.

Goessel finished the 2008 season with a 10-1 record.

In accumulating statistics, only three of the 11 games were a full four quarters.

Goessel won eight of the games by the 45-point rule and several of those games ended after two quarters.
